Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced health care assistant to join a highly skilled and motivated team of medical, nursing, allied health professionals and social workers contribute to the delivery of high quality palliative and end of life care services on our in-patient unit.

The successful applicant will be a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual who will join our welcoming and caring environment. We pride ourselves on the high standards of care we deliver and are looking for applicants with a passion for palliative care, who have the right knowledge and skills to support this. You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate in a sensitive manner and enjoy working as part of a team. Health care assistants will be educated to NVQ level 2 in Health and Social care or equivalent and have previous experience in a similar care setting.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain effective communication with other members of the clinical team and with all staff, other professionals, patients and their families.
  • Be actively involved in multidisciplinary team handovers and meetings.
  • Act as second checker alongside registered nurse in the administration of CD medications
  • Undertake visual assessment of pressure areas with appropriate competencies and collaborate with registered nurse on duty to advise of any changes
  • Manage own time effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of the service
  • Participate in the delivery of personal care needs of patients on a daily basis
  • Awareness of the palliative care approach and its significance in informing an appropriate communication process
  • Effective listening and information giving, including the importance of non-verbal communication
  • Understand boundaries of self and patient relationships and the impact of his/her own communication and approach may have on the well being of patient and carer
  • Understand the boundaries of the HCA role and know when to refer on to other professionals;
  • Aware of family dynamics in promoting wellbeing of patients

Our Living Well Centre delivers a 12 week programme offering advice and strategies to enable people with life limiting illnesses cope better with their health and wellbeing and support them to regain control of their life.   • Communicating any investigation results they have found, the general condition of patients to the qualified nurse.
  • Receiving & acting appropriately to the receipt of sensitive information from patients, relatives etc and ensuring such information is delivered to the qualified staff.

  • Identify situations in relation to the needs of patients, families & carers
  • Recognise limitations within the HCA role & to be able to refer appropriately accordingly to needs.
