Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Deputy Matron for Surgical and Endoscopy Wards (Band 6) to join our expanding clinical team at The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in developing our new surgical and endoscopy services while maintaining our reputation for delivering world-class, patient-centred care.
You will work alongside an exceptional multidisciplinary team, contributing to high-quality outcomes for both private and NHS patients. The role involves supporting perioperative pathways, assisting in endoscopic procedures, and leading nursing care to uphold the hospitals standards of excellence.
Main duties of the job
Leadership & Governance
- Support the Matron in leading and managing the surgical and endoscopy nursing teams.
- Maintain high standards of clinical governance, infection control, and patient safety.
- Lead by example in promoting evidence-based best practice.
- Ensure adherence to NMC code, hospital policies, and all statutory regulations.
- Contribute to CQC compliance, audit programmes, and service development projects.
Operational Management
- Help with day-to-day running of surgical and endoscopy wards, ensuring efficient patient flow.
- Assist in managing safe staffing levels and skill mix to meet patient needs and service demands.
- Support induction, and retention of nursing staff.
- Contribute to rota management and workforce planning.
- Support the coordination and operational delivery of theatre and endoscopy lists.
Clinical Excellence
- Act as a senior clinical resource and role model for nursing staff.
- Support patient care from pre-assessment through to discharge.
- Participate in endoscopy and perioperative nursing practice where required.
- Ensure consistent implementation of infection prevention and control policies.
Quality, Safety & Improvement
- Lead audits, patient feedback initiatives, and incident reviews.
- Identify and implement service improvements that enhance patient experience and outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with consultants, allied health professionals, and management to optimise clinical pathways.
- Drive adherence to JAG and CQC standards across all surgical and endoscopy areas.
