Job summary

Job Purpose

To provide safe, timely, and effective clinical care within East Kent Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs) based at WHH and QEQM. You will assess, diagnose, and treat patients presenting via NHS 111 bookings, A&E redirections, and walk-ins, working collaboratively with nursing, reception, and allied professionals under the East Kent UTC Alliance (EKHUFT, Invicta Health CIC, Thanet Health CIC and IC24).

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Deliver face-to-face consultations and urgent care for patients presenting with acute or minor illness and injury.
  • Undertake clinical assessments, investigations, and management plans in line with UTC clinical pathways.
  • Provide advice to patients and referrers on appropriate care, treatment, and safety-netting.
  • Liaise with A&E teams, community services, and primary care partners to ensure seamless care.
  • Support effective triage, prioritisation, and redirection of patients where clinically appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records on CLEO and EMIS systems and complete statutory documentation promptly.
  • Work within IC24s prescribing formulary and clinical governance framework.
  • Participate in audit, learning events and educational sessions.
  • Promote team working and positive engagement with colleagues across Alliance sites.
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement and patient experience initiatives.

Flexibility and Technical Requirements

UTC GPs must be flexible to work rotational sessions including evenings, overnights and weekends on a 24/7 basis.

IC24 places a strong emphasis on digital systems basic competence with CLEO, EMIS, Outlook and mobile devices is required (training provided).

KEY RESPONSIBILITES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Consult with Patients whose clinical details are passed from the call centre following NHS 111 Pathways assessment, as walk-ins, redirected from A&E, or via the IC24 Co-ordinator.
  • Advise patients over the telephone, after referral from NHS 111 or the call centre, who require professional advice, including ambulance and ED triage.
  • Represent IC24 in a professional manner when in contact with the general public and other professionals.
  • Work as a doctor as required by service demands during a session, or to provide cover as an IC24 Doctor on the rota or in other work settings.
  • Be responsible for prioritisation and timeliness of all consultations.
  • Work with the management team, together with other colleagues, to maximise effective and efficient delivery of care to patients.
  • Promote close teamwork between colleagues and to continually strive to improve the service.
  • Be available for meetings and appraisals as required.
  • Regularly update personal clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Work within the prescribing formulary taking account of the minimum recommended length of prescribed treatment.

Flexibility around base location if the service changes due to unforeseen circumstances arising.

Technical

IC24 puts a considerable emphasis on IT. Computer, mobile phone and keyboard skills of a basic, but accurate nature will need to be mastered at an early stage. Training will be provided.
