As Chief Medical Officer, you will play a central role in shaping the future of BPAS's medical services. You will provide strategic leadership to our medical teams, ensuring we continue to deliver safe, compassionate, evidence-based care to every person who accesses our services. You will also be an ambassador for BPAS in national conversations about reproductive healthcare, helping to influence policy and practice at a critical moment in our sector.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead the vision and strategic direction for BPASs medical workforce, ensuring excellence in clinical standards, patient safety and quality of care.

  • Co-develop and deliver BPASs clinical strategy with executive colleagues, fostering an integrated, evidence-based approach to abortion and reproductive healthcare.

  • Act as the organisations Responsible Officer, ensuring professional standards, revalidation, and effective appraisal processes for medical staff.

  • Provide expert advice to the Board and senior leaders on clinical governance, risk, patient safety, and compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements.

  • Champion innovation, research and continuous improvement in medical practice, promoting compassionate, person-centred care.

  • Represent BPAS nationally and internationally, building constructive relationships with regulators, Royal Colleges, academic partners and other stakeholders.

  • Lead the development of sustainable workforce plans, ensuring BPAS attracts, develops and retains a high-quality, motivated medical workforce.

  • Contribute to corporate leadership and financial stewardship, supporting the organisations strategic, operational and business planning objectives.

    • Full GMC registration and evidence of revalidation.
    • Completion of Responsible Officer training (or willingness to complete on appointment).
    • Formal management/leadership training or significant experience gained within a healthcare setting at a senior level.

    • In-depth understanding of abortion law, ethical frameworks, and best practice guidelines.
    • Understanding of statutory duties under the Medical Profession (Responsible Officers) Regulations.
    • Strong awareness of NHS structure, clinical governance, and independent healthcare requirements.
    • Insight into current and emerging reproductive health policy and evidence-based care.
    • Understanding of health inequalities and strategies to address barriers to access. (Desirable)
