Job summary

We have a great opportunity for a dynamic and visionary manager to join our team as the Manager of our 8-bedded Inpatient Unit. We are looking for an experienced manager with strong leadership skills who is dynamic, focused and who puts excellent patient care at the centre of all they do.

Main duties of the job

To develop and lead the St Clare Hospice Inpatient Unit, ensuring that all specialist care delivered is Safe, Caring, Responsive, Effective and Well-led at all times.

Responsible for the operational management of all personnel within IPU.

To lead the team in a dynamic model, implementing strong models of leadership and care based around the St Clare values framework.

Responsible for the strategic direction of the IPU to ensure that we are being responsive to patient need within the area that we cover.

To work in collaboration with all clinical managers across the hospice to ensure an integrated approach to care at all times.

To be committed to a model of quality improvement at all times, being active in leading within the hospice clinical audit group and any research relevant to their scope of practice or delivery.

To coach, support and motivate staff to deliver optimal care at all times.

To ensure all team members subscribe and commit to the appraisal and personal development plans model used within the hospice, supporting their development and the attainment of all hospice strategies or objectives.

Job responsibilities

Be a visible and positive role model across the hospice.

Develop a culture within the IPU that is positive, professional and welcoming that puts the patient and their needs at the centre of all we do.

Promote a culture of openness, honesty, respect and integrity using the St Clare Values and Behaviour framework to underpin this.

Ensure adequate staffing levels and skills mix within the IPU at all times.

Responsible for the recruitment, selection, deployment, development, management, motivation and support of IPU staff.

Develop and maintain an effective communication approach for disseminating information to the IPU team.

Ensure that effective HR reporting and management systems are maintained and acted upon as required.

Meet regularly with the Director of Patient Care and Quality to discuss IPU progress and developments in line with organisational strategy.

Ensure the system of annual appraisals and regular 1:1 feedback to those staff working as part of the nursing team within the IPU is completed on a yearly basis

Lead in the investigation of complaints and patient safety incidents on IPU in line with local policies and procedures, ensuring that appropriate actions are taken in a timely manner.

Organise and manage own time and workload effectively.

Ensure that clinical equipment on the IPU is maintained in good order, is used appropriately and stored safely for use within the IPU.

Identify training needs across the nursing team and liaising with the Director of Patient Care and Quality to agree responsive training programmes.

Direct involvement in the ongoing education and development of the nursing team through the development and delivery of clinical education both in house and external, ensuring that evaluation is completed.

To develop and maintain external relationships to ensure the sharing of good practice and information.

Take an active role in quality assurance initiatives, including the setting and auditing of standards and implementing resulting action plans.

Maintain own professional development and knowledge of current nursing and palliative care issues to meet own professional revalidation requirements and organisational objectives, ensuring that nursing practice on IPU is research based and best practice.

To oversee student placements on the IPU.

Support research and audits on IPU as required.

Develop and implement a robust induction and preceptorship programme for new staff.

Inspire the IPU team to learn, to achieve their potential and deliver optimal and current palliative care at all times.

Be committed to the overall strategies of the hospice and use these to inform the strategic plan for the IPU and implement any changes positively.

Be committed to a model of quality improvement (QI) at all times.

Implement national and local guidance, legal frameworks and initiatives in to all care delivered at all times.

Support the Director of Patient Care and Quality and other members of the Senior Leadership Team with the achievement of any strategic or contractual obligations for our NHS commissioners or any other funders.

Be committed to the fundraising aspect of St Clare, recognising and respecting that charitable donations are imperative for all care delivered from St Clare Hospice.

Monitor the Out of Hours advice line including activity and advice given, working in collaboration with the Medical Director in relation to action required.

Develop clinical protocols to facilitate practice developments, benchmarking where possible, to ensure that staff adhere to best evidence-based practice and makes optimum use of resources to achieve the highest standards of care and service.

Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, staff, and volunteers, ensuring that staff and volunteers are aware of their responsibility in relation to health and safety, and cleanliness.

Collate and report on IPU data as requested.
