Job summary

 To provide face to face and telephone triage, assessment and brief support to ensure patients with mental health needs access the most appropriate pathway or intervention. The postholder will identify risk, offer coping skills based interventions, and support onward referral where necessary

Main duties of the job

Provide mental health triage for patients referred into the Mental Health Hub.

Identify presenting needs within the scope of the Mental Health Hub remit (e.g. depression, anxiety, panic, sleep issues, situational distress, etc.).

Provide short term, psychologically informed interventions such as coping skills, psychoeducation and self-help tools.

Provide helpful conversations to help patients in understanding their challenges and direct them towards the most appropriate support options available.

Determine the most appropriate next steps, including brief intervention, signposting or onward referral.

Our services are designed to provide timely, informed responses that connect people with the right support, at the right time, in line with their individual needs and goals. The Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor  role sits within the LSMP TLS Mental Health Hub and plays a central part in this model by offering responsive mental health triage, assessment, brief intervention and psychoeducation. MHAs work collaboratively with GPs, reception teams, LMWS Talking Therapies, PCMH, Forward Leeds, CMHTs and wider system partners to ensure safe, appropriate and person centred care, consistent with Northpoints values.

We have a unique opportunity for a Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor (MHA) to join Northpoint’s Mental Health Hub, working hybrid across the Leeds Student Medical Practice (LSMP), The Light Surgery (TLS), and Small Mill, Leeds. This is a frontfacing, rewarding role supporting adults with mild to moderate mental health needs through timely triage, brief intervention, and signposting. You will join us on a fixed-term contract, part-time (14 hours per week), with a competitive salary and employer pension contribution.

What you will be doing as our Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor (MHA)

As our Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor, you will:

  • Identify presenting needs such as anxiety, depression, panic, sleep difficulties and situational distress
  • Deliver short-term, psychologically informed interventions including coping strategies and psychoeducation
  • Provide supportive conversations that empower individuals to understand and manage their challenges
  • Determine appropriate next steps – brief intervention, signposting or onward referral
  • Work collaboratively across Primary Care, Secondary Care and Third Sector partners

This role requires sound clinical judgement, confidence in risk assessment, and the ability to work within service targets while maintaining compassionate, person-centred care.

What are we looking for in our Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor

  • A relevant Level 3 qualification (or psychology graduate) with solid experience supporting adults with mild to moderate mental health needs
  • At least two years’ experience in a mental health setting, including assessment and risk management
  • Confidence delivering brief, psychologically informed, time-limited interventions
  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding, confidentiality and safe practice
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence using core IT systems
  • A compassionate, inclusive approach with a genuine commitment to empowerment and co-production
