Consultant Paediatrician (CYP ADHD & Autism)

Job summary

As Consultant Paediatrician, you will provide senior clinical leadership and assurance across our CYP ADHD Assessment Service and CYP Autism Assessment Service (Right to Choose and locally commissioned pathways). You will oversee the delivery of NICE aligned diagnostic assessments for children and young people aged 6 to 18, support MDT colleagues, and ensure outstanding clinical governance and safeguarding practices.

You will contribute to shaping a high performing, multi agency model blending remote and in person appointments, structured developmental assessments, MDT reviews, and robust triage and reporting processes.

Main duties of the job

ADHD Pathway
  • Undertake or sign off ADHD diagnostic assessments using DSM5/ICD11 criteria and validated tools.
  • Provide senior opinion on complex or borderline cases.
  • Oversee triage decisions and advise on evidence required before assessment.
  • Determine when QB Test or cognitive assessment is needed and interpret results.
  • Produce clear diagnostic outcome letters and care plans aligned with NICE guidance.
  • Identify comorbidities and escalate safeguarding concerns as appropriate.
Autism Pathway
  • Lead and/or sign off MDT Autism assessments including history, observation, and structured tools (e.g., ADOS).
  • Provide senior input into complex or atypical presentations.
  • Advise when additional assessments (SaLT / cognitive / structured interviews) are required.
  • Produce highquality diagnostic reports and postassessment plans.
MDT Leadership & Governance
  • Lead weekly MDT meetings covering triage, complex cases, safeguarding and governance.
  • Supervise GPs, psychologists, Band 7 clinicians, and other team members.
  • Ensure assessments meet NICE standards and service SOP requirements.
  • Contribute to audit, QI, medicines management, and PSIRFaligned governance.
Safeguarding
  • Maintain Level 3 safeguarding competence.
  • Escalate and manage safeguarding concerns following GMC guidance
