Job summary
An exciting position is available for a substantive consultant
position working 10 PAs between Royal Trinity Hospice (5PAs) and St Georges
University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (5PAs). You would join the well-established
medical teams at both sites. Participation in training, audit and management is
actively encouraged across both sites.

Negotiable according to current consultant salary scale plus London Weighting
Hours: This
is a full time post (10PAs) with a 1 in 8 second on call commitment (2% on call
allowance)

Main duties of the job
At Trinity Hospice, the post
holder will provide community as well as inpatient care.
At St Georges University
Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust the post-holder will provide medical input to
the multi-professional hospital support team.
At both sites the post-holder
will share with colleagues in the training and professional development of the
Specialist Registrars. The post holder will also be involved with the audit, research
and teaching programmes.
Skills and experience required:
- Experience in a wide range of palliative care settings
- Thorough knowledge of principles and practice of palliative care
- Enthusiasm for teaching
- MRCP, MRCGP, FRCR or FRCA
- Full registration with the GMC
- On or within six months of being on specialist register for Palliative medicine
- Knowledge/experience of Primary Care Sector
- Experience of training in research methodology
- Experience of clinical audit

The post is for 10 PAs; 8 PAs providing direct clinical care and 2 PAs supporting professional activities. This post has 5 PAs at St Georges University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust working with the Hospital Palliative Care Team, and 5 PAs at Royal Trinity Hospice.
At Trinity Hospice, the post holder will provide in-patient as well as community care. On the inpatient unit the number of patients for review on a Consultant Ward round averages between 9 and 12. Consultants provide review of new admissions (average 2 per day) on the day of admission. In the community the consultant may do 2-3 home visits per week and the virtual support service will initially support 6 patients at home.
At St Georges University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust the post-holder will provide medical input to the multi-professional hospital support team.
At both sites the post-holder will share with colleagues in the training and professional development of the Specialist Registrars. He/she will also be involved with the audit and research programmes.
The post holder will be supported directly by the Medical Director at the hospice and by the Clinical Lead at St Georges. In addition there will be peer support from other consultants in post and senior members of the multidisciplinary teams at both sites.
Key roles
- Be responsible for the inpatients at Royal Trinity Hospice and supervise the clinical care provided by the non- consultant grade doctors attached to the in- patient unit and the community teams in conjunction with the other consultants at the Hospice
- Provide consultant support to the hospital palliative care team at St Georges University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (in conjunction with other consultants).
- Provide clinical leadership for the community palliative care teams working across the catchment area and develop close links with the relevant Primary Care Teams in the area.
- Provide leadership and guidance for the professional development of Specialist Registrars in Palliative Medicine at both sites.
- Jointly with consultant colleagues act as Educational Supervisor to Specialist Registrars within the Specialist Registrar Rotation for Palliative Medicine.
- Take part in the second on-call rota with the other consultants to enable continuous senior cover for the junior medical staff on-call.
- Participate in multidisciplinary teaching programmes in Trinity Hospice as well as in the community.
- Participate and contribute to audit, research and clinical governance activities at both sites.
- Develop and maintain liaison between professional organisations, regionally and nationally.
- Participate and strengthen the continuing professional development educational programme
- Participate in managerial responsibilities at both sites as required.
- Contribute to the teaching of medical undergraduates at both sites
