Job summary
Do you have a specialist interest in providing support and treatment to patients living with obesity? If yes, the specialist weight management team at NUTH are looking to recruit a salaried G.P wSI 1PA/ week to support their multidisciplinary team (MDT), temporarily for 10 months from March 2026- end Dec 2026
Main duties of the job
Support discussion regarding selection of patients suitable for bariatric surgery and anti obesity drugs- (following ICB eligibility guidance, slightly different to that which G.Ps have, for example we can select patients needing time sensitive treatment e.g. required to lose weight to receive surgery). Given this we receive a lot of queries from NUTH specialities.
- Support MDT meetings(occur on Fri afternoons 1.5hrs)
- Answer queries from team. In relation to this, some flexibility to spread the time over the week would be the ideal so queries can be responded to quickly.
- As required contact with patients, previous medic has undertaken this over the telephone but a 1:1 small clinic would also be beneficial e.g. monthly
- Help with script requests for higher risk patients. We have a non-medical prescriber (pharmacist who oversees most of the prescribing/scripts).
-Appropriate documentation as required on SystmOne and e-record.
-Communication with NUTH consultants / GPs about complex cases is also needed (clinical discussions / writing letters. There is also a pilot of complex patients under the abdominal wall surgeons here at NUTH which requires medical oversight.
The team are operationally managed by the community dietetic manager and based at Regent Point Gosforth. We have good links with ICB healthier weight strategic leads, Tier 4 bariatric service in North Tyneside, NUTH endocrinologists, the specialist diabetes service and other NUTH specialities.

Job description
Job responsibilities
The experienced, friendly and committed MDT comprises: Dietitians, psychologists, physio, non-medical prescriber (pharmacist) and admin support.
The medic post is funded through temporary ICB inequalities funding, and the team have worked hard to evolve with this funding. They have collected impressive outcome data to date and are in the early stages of prescribing anti obesity medications. The team is currently evolving, hoping to prescribe more anti obesity medications and secure onward funding. Given this, it is essential you enjoy participating in effective MDT work and have enthusiasm to help develop the service and treatment pathways.
We are excited by the opportunity to involve a G.P in the team to bring ideas and support the service in working more efficiently with Newcastle primary care services. The service is currently commissioned to support up to 285 patients per year living with obesity who have a Newcastle G.P. Within this we are also supporting some complex referrals from NUTH specialities and anticipate in future our service eligibility will focus on the most complex patients (requiring specialist MDT support).
