Do you have a passion for palliative care?
We are looking for a part-time Specialty Doctor with a real interest in palliative care keen to join our holistic multidisciplinary team, working mainly on our 12-bedded inpatient unit based at Michael Sobell House on the site of Mount Vernon Hospital, in Northwood, West London.
It is a fabulous placement with opportunities to learn more about symptom control, family distress, complex communication and social concerns.

Main duties of the job
Main duties include daily review of current inpatients , admitting new patients, preparing patients for discharge and working closely with the medical and multidisciplinary team in a collaborative way.
Discovering what matters most to people at this critical stage of life will be a key part of the role. You will be joining an expert and enthusiastic team.
There may be the opportunity to visit patients at home or in local care homes for assessment.
The role includes learning via teaching ward rounds, lots of case discussions around decision-making and ethics.
Experience in palliative care in general practice, geriatrics or previous hospice role is desirable.

Michael Sobell House is one of 2 sites managed by Harlington Hospice. The sites together provide an integrated multidisciplinary service to the residents of Hillingdon and surrounds.
At Michael Sobell (Mount Vernon site) we have our Inpatient Unit, plus a Wellbeing Service, Hospice at Home and an emerging Coordination Hub. At Landsdowne House (Harlington site) we have our Child and Adolescents Bereavement Service (CABS) and a borough wide Lymphoedema Service.
The hospice is leading on integration of local palliative care services with great opportunities for innovation and realistic change.
The team includes doctors, nurse consultant, therapists (family therapy, OT, physio and complementary) amazing nurses, HCAs and volunteers.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Specialty Doctor in Palliative Medicine 0.4 - 0.6 (2-3days)
Responsible to: Medical Director
Michael Sobell House offers intensive and holistic palliative care for people living with advancing illness as well as providing support for their families and carers.
Patients come from across the catchment area of Hillingdon, and currently 10 inpatient beds are operational, with the potential to flex to 12 beds.
The inpatient multidisciplinary team consists of an expert nursing team including a Nurse Consultant, a talented rehab team, family support, chaplaincy, child bereavement support, GP registrars, Specialty doctors and a Consultant in Palliative Medicine.
The Hospice is part of the Harlington Hospice range of services which includes a Night Hospice team, a new Wellbeing Service, lymphoedema service and an award winning Child and Adolescent Bereavement Team.
The team works very closely with the Hillingdon Hospital and the CNWL palliative care teams. Strategically, a more integrated service is evolving with a Palliative Coordination Hub about to launch.
There are several innovative education projects being led by the Hospice with many opportunities for teaching, learning and project work.
Main Job Purpose
The post holder will work at Michael Sobell House providing day to day medical cover for the inpatient unit.
Duties of the post
Clinical
- To admit patients and establish holistic management plans in conjunction with medical colleagues and the Nurse Consultant.
- To provide ongoing medical/psychosocial daily review of patients on the inpatient unit in collaboration with other team members
- To provide information and support to relatives and carers,
- To liaise with GPs and Hospital Consultants
- To liaise with and support Community CNS teams and other agencies involved in the new Coordination Hub
- To occasionally visit patients at home or in local care homes
- To assist in clinical audit
- To supervise the GP Registrars
- To present at multi-disciplinary meetings and other clinical meetings
Administrative
- To maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical and medication records
- To complete patient discharge summaries and, in the case of patients who have died, the relevant medico-legal documentation
Teaching
Active participation in educational programmes for healthcare professional
General
- Be expected to undertake Continuous Professional Development.
- Be expected to be aware of his/her responsibilities towards health and safety
- Be required to familiarise him/herself with the Hospice Policies and Procedures as applicable
- Undergo annual medical appraisal, as part of the Revalidation for Doctors programme.
