Job summary

The Help Out Barnsley (HOB) project is a partnership with Barnsley Council and the Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub. The project is in place to ensure that people living or settling in the Barnsley area who have had to relocate in emergency situations can access the items they need to furnish their homes. Storage is also provided for people who have had to leave their homes, keeping their items safe until they have suitable accommodation. Help Out Barnsley will ensure that cost-effective support can be provided to those who need it whilst also generating funds for Barnsley Hospice.

Main duties of the job

The Warehouse Operative (HOB Project) will work with the Retail Operations Manager to ensure the success of the Help Out Barnsley project. The Operative will provide a customer-focused and sensitive service to clients of the HOB scheme and ensure the smooth-running of the warehousing operation.

About us

Barnsley Hospice is a charity that provides specialist palliative and end of life care to hundreds of local people and those close to them each year. Our main priority is to achieve the best possible quality of life for people living with a life- limiting illness, whilst supporting those close to them during the period of illness and bereavement. As a specialist care provider, the range of skills we offer include, pain and symptom management, emotional support and end of life care. The hospice currently employs about 100 people and has a team of volunteers, based both at the hospice and within our Retail Hub.

Job responsibilities

Key Duties and responsibilities

1.To accept, identify and separate donated items, categorising and establishing the quality of each donated item

2.Determine the suitability of items to support the HOB scheme (these will include electrical household items, furniture, non-perishable household items),

3.Ensure any items allocated to the HOB project are packed and stored correctly, using the appropriate equipment (including a pallet lifter)

4.Load the van for deliveries, as well as supporting deliveries on an ad hoc basis.

5.Provide a sensitive and customer-focused service to clients and customers of the HOB, where items are collected from Unit 14

6.Carry out PAT testing for electrical items that will be provided to clients of the HOB project

7.To keep accurate and up to date records within the HOB scheme

8.To liaise and work with external partners

9.To be responsible for the security and integrity of our external site Unit 14 in accordance with policies and procedures set out for this purpose

10.Working in line with safe systems of work and risk assessments

11.Positively represent the hospice and the HOB project in line with our values

12.Identify opportunities for improvements in processes and the service provided

13.This role will adapt overtime so be flexible and adaptable

14.To work and liaise with fellow colleagues from the Retail Hub and HOB Scheme

Other Responsibilities

1.To undertake any other duties, commensurate with the role as required by the Hospice.

2.To act as an ambassador of the Hospice, maintaining honesty, integrity and trustworthiness at all times.

3.The post holder will be expected to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

4.The post holder will ensure that they are aware of and apply health and safety and fire precautions.

5.The post holder will ensure that risk management and safeguarding procedures and relevant good practice guidelines are followed at all times.

6.The post holder is to ensure data protection is maintained at all times.

7.The post holder will be flexible in terms of working hours in order to meet service needs.

8.The post holder will support the Hospice as required, across the range of duties as appropriate within the grading of this post. In the context of rapid and ongoing change within the Hospice, the above responsibilities represent the current priorities and requirements for the post. These priorities will develop and evolve over time. Any significant changes will be the subject of full communication and consultation with the post holder.
