Job responsibilities

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

• To actively encourage a home from home family atmosphere within Zoes Place Baby Hospice.
• Participate in the assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care to children with individual health needs, working in partnership with the family at all times.
• To ensure the safe transcribing, administration, storage and control of all medications in accordance with the policy and procedures.
• To liaise and communicate effectively with all necessary personnel to ensure accurate and safe information sharing in accordance with the Data Protection Act (2018), the Caldicott Principles, the GDPR regulations and the hospice local policy and procedures.
• To ensure that all the childs and family data is recorded accurately, timely and confidentially in accordance with the NMC Professional Code and the hospice policy and procedures.
• To ensure the safe storage or all data and records required for the role in accordance with policy and procedures.
• To be involved in the assessment of staff competence and in the training and mentoring of staff as appropriate to the role.
• To maintain own professional development with support from senior staff and use evidence to underpin practice.
• To adhere to Zoes Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards at all times and to promote these to others.
• To maintain NMC professional registration and revalidation requirements in accordance with NMC guidelines.
• Adopt the role of link worker/ primary nurse as required by Zoes Place Hospice.
• Take advantage of training opportunities to further develop your skills to enhance your role within Zoes Place including all mandatory training sessions.
• Attend and participate in an annual appraisal and regular reviews of performance and objectives, identifying gaps in knowledge/skills and developing a plan to enhance service and self development.
• To encourage and promote the philosophy of Zoes Place and present a good public image, to co-operate with all staff in maintaining good relationships with outside agencies in order to uphold the charitys image and to win increased support for its work.
• To be able to confidently and competently take charge on the shift and manage the team throughout the shift.
• To provide effective and accurate hand over to colleagues ensuring a safe transfer of information to enable the ongoing care needs to be met.
• To be able to communicate effectively with all members of the team and to develop excellent relationships with the multi-disciplinary teams (MDT) both internal and external to the hospice.
• To participate in mandatory Clinical supervision as directed by the Head of Care and to take responsibility for the supervision of the support workers within the team.
• To attend staff meetings and participate in other MDT meetings as appropriate.
• To undertake risk assessments and management to ensure that staff, families, children and visitors are safe.
• To be aware of the safeguarding children and safeguarding adults procedures and policy within Zoës Place baby hospice, to attend all safeguarding training and to adhere to the Local Safeguarding Partnership Procedures at all times.
• To participate in the induction of new staff to Zoes Place.
• To act as a role model showing example in regard to behaviour, attitude, conduct and appearance.
• To mentor, supervise and support student nurses during their placement at Zoes Place.
• To be able to carry out effective complaint, accident and incident reporting.
• To play an active part in the Clinical Governance framework within the hospice.
• To be aware of the Infection Prevention and Control policies and work in accordance with IPC procedures at all times.
• To maintain correct standards of uniform and personal appearance as outlined in the policy.
• To promote the speciality of palliative care and evidence based practices and develop the service within the sphere of responsibility.
• To be able to support the user and the family at the time of death, respecting an individuals beliefs, community, culture and religion.
• To be aware of, and responsive to, the changing nature of the Trust and adopt a flexible and pro-active approach to work.
• To participate with the Nurse on call rota within the hospice.
• Ensure your role has a positive influence on key performance indicators.
• Seek consistently to improve nursing practice in line with evidence, audit findings and new emerging guidance.
• Act as an advocate for the child and family.

Experience

Essential

• Ability to practice within the scope of the NMC code of professional practice
• Experience working with children with complex health needs
• Passion for working as an advocate for children with complex health needs
• Awareness of safeguarding children procedures
• Understanding of holistic and person centred care.
• Experience in relevant clinical area
• Understanding of clinical governance and audit.
• Experience with medical devices
• Excellent communication skills
• Knows the principles of caring for children with palliative care or bereavement needs
• Evidence of continued professional development
• Excellent use of the English language demonstrated through effective written and verbal communication
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
• Team work
• Organisational and planning skills
• Ability to assess, plan and implement, individualised nursing care

• Tracheostomy trained

Qualifications

Essential

• RSCN or RN (child)
• Current NMC registration

• Degree
• Teaching qualification
• Counselling course
