Job summary

Acorns Childrens Hospice, Birmingham Womens and Childrens (BWCH) Foundation Trust and Birmingham Community Trust (BCHC) are looking for a rotational nurse to work in their palliative care settings across Birmingham. These three organisations share the same vision in that every baby, child and young person living in our region who is life-limited or life-threatened, and their families will receive the specialist support they need

This is an innovative post providesan opportunity for a band 5 nurse to rotate over a 2-year period across the three organisations, working with skilled nurses, experienced multi disciplinary teams, allied health professionals and paediatric palliative care consultants.We welcome applicants who have a passion and interest in palliative care with varied experience.

The rotational post will provide three periods of an eight-month rotation opportunity to a band 5 nurse. You will be part of a small team of three nurses who will gain clinical experience and expertise working alongside specialist palliative teams across three care settings; Birmingham Womens and Childrens hospital, Acorns Childrens Hospice, and Birmingham Community Palliative Care Team.

Main duties of the job

This initiative will support the design and implementation of a new approach to develop skills and knowledge in paediatric palliative care with peer-to-peer connections, education and training, opportunities to work in different care settings. The post holder will gain insight and understanding to support culturally competent care which will enhance and improve the patient and family experience, following patients and their families throughout their pathway to ensure equal access to all services.

In addition to the clinical experience, the postholders will be expected to and be supported to successfully complete planned education opportunities including an accredited palliative care course provided by Birmingham University. They will also receive clinical supervision and preceptorship support from BWCH and BCHC. Participants will also be expected to participate in the proposed evaluation of the rotational post program.

This post will provide a supportive pathway for nurses who wish to further their career and specialise in a career in paediatric palliative care. At the end of the rotation those who have successfully completed the programme will have the opportunity to apply for a substantive post at one of the 3 organisations.

The post holder will spend 8 months within each participating organisation allowing them to embed with the team and gain credible experience, with a focus on education, training and development and completion of competencies within each care setting.

Acorns has three 7 bedded childrens hospices, providing support to children and their families from across the West Midland area. In the last year Acorns cared for over 870 children and supported more than 1,090 families.

BWCH provides care for over 200,000 children and young people a year from all over the UK and Europe and is one of the leading paediatric teaching and research centres in the country.

Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust (BCHC) is a 24/7 service one of the biggest across the east and West Midlands providing responsive and specialist palliative care to children in their own homes.

It is desirable for applicants to have 12 months experience post qualification, however a strong application and evidence of a passion for a career in palliative care will be considered.
