Job description

Job responsibilities

Acorns Children's Hospice Trust are looking for a Young Person Worker to join our Family Services Teams in our Birmingham Hospice.  The Young Person Worker will be an advocate for young people, champion the provision of services and support with their preparation for adulthood.

About the Role

At Acorns Childrens Hospice, we care for babies, children and young people up to 18 years and support their families.  Our teams provide a range of specialist care services for life-limited and life-threatened children across our region. It is estimated that for every child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, five family members will be directly impacted. Our aim at Acorns is to help families feel equipped to cope at every stage of their childs life with dedicated teams offering psychological, emotional and practical support.

As a Young Person Worker, you will be an advocate for the needs of young people within the hospice environment. Youll work with the young person, listening to their goals and aspirations and help them to prepare for adulthood and transition. Youll give young people a voice in the organisation, seeking feedback from them and delivering new initiatives to meet their needs.

Youll work with the Young Person Workers in our two other hospices, to meet organisational objectives and to share best practice.  Youll plan, develop and deliver a strategy that achieves operational objectives including creating individual and group therapeutic-based support systems and Young Person Interest Forums.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of services for young people, assisting in the delivery of a range of training programmes, participation in outreach work and contribution to service evaluation.

About You

You will be professionally qualified to degree level in a field such as Social Work, Community Nursing, Youth Work, Counselling or Play Therapy.  You will have experience of organising and implementing programmes of activity for young people and of providing therapeutic based support to them.

Youll need to be able to travel around the Acorns region independently and some evening and weekend work will be required to meet the needs of the young people.

What We Offer

  • £31,571 per annum (pro rata), plus allowances (additional £1181 per annum)
  • 22.5 hours per week (ideally Wednesday to Friday)
  • Hospice-based (B29 6HZ) with travel
  • Employee discounts from leading retailers
  • Employee gym discount scheme
  • Bike-to-Work scheme
  • Generous contribution to group personal pension plan or continuation of current NHS pension scheme. Organisation will contribute 7.5%
  • NHS pension scheme life assurance or Acorns group life assurance scheme

Interviews are scheduled to be held on 2 February

You need to be eligible to work in the UK to be considered for this role. We are committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and therefore any successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check for children and will be asked to provide two satisfactory references.

As a UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting organisation we are committed to ensuring that the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child is embedded into both culture and practice within the organisation. As an employee you will be a Duty Bearer for Childrens Rights and support all children to be Rights Holders.
