Job summary

The Estates Operative provides practical and compassionate support across the hospice, ensuring dignity, safety, and respect for patients, families, and staff at all times. This role combines hands-on operational duties with sensitive responsibilities, including work within the mortuary, where professionalism and empathy are essential.

Main duties of the job

Portering Duties Transport patients, equipment, and supplies safely and efficiently. Set up rooms and public areas for clinical or family use. Respond promptly to porter service requests, prioritising urgent needs. Assist with waste collection and disposal. Support fleet management and carry out vehicle checks. Perform basic maintenance tasks (e.g., lightbulb changes, furniture assembly). Assist with event setups, including the Festival of Light. Mortuary Duties Transfer deceased patients respectfully in line with hospice protocols. Prepare viewing areas for families, ensuring privacy and dignity. Liaise with funeral directors and maintain accurate records. Health, Safety & Compliance Adhere to health and safety policies, including infection control and manual handling. Complete statutory checks and report incidents promptly. Support risk assessments and safe systems of work. Professional & Team Responsibilities Communicate sensitively with patients, families, and colleagues. Work collaboratively across departments to ensure smooth operations.
