Job summary

Substance Misuse Nurses:

  • Deliver onsite dispensing & supervision of substitute opiate medication; Follow Controlled Drug Policies and Procedures; Provide advice, information, and guidance on the management of substance misuse to service users engaged with services; Undertake comprehensive clinical assessments; Agree treatment plans with service users, and review regularly; Undertake drug screening (urine, fingerprint and oral); Ensure case notes and other statutory records are up to date and kept in accordance with Kaleidoscope policies & procedures/regional information sharing protocols; Deliver clinical interventions, including HCV testing, HBV immunisation and naloxone training/administration where appropriate; Deliver subcutaneous injection of buprenorphine; Liaise with community pharmacies to ensure prescriptions are in place and monitored appropriately; Provide advice, support and training to GPs, pharmacists, and other professionals where appropriate; Participate in clinical audits and service reviews; Facilitate the transfer of service users from secondary to primary care services, and lead with referrals/liaison with Community Mental Health Teams and other community substance misuse treatment providers on leaving Kaleidoscope; Actively encourage service user involvement & feedback and ensure views are considered in informing the development of the service; Collate & enter data electronically and contribute to service reports.

Main duties of the job

  1. Maintain and develop personal expertise and knowledge by reading, networking and further training to develop professional competence and to contribute to the development of competence within the team.
  2. Help with the induction and orientation of new staff, volunteers, and students.
  3. Where relevant, develop and maintain the competencies needed to undertake the role of Substance Misuse Nurse.
  4. Ensure professional development by seeking regular supervision and annual appraisals.
  5. Effectively manage own time and prioritise workload, maintaining own administration and accurate personal records regarding travel, diary appointments, TOIL, and expenses incurred.
  6. Be accountable and responsible for own professional practice, operating in line with professional code of conduct and within organisational policy and procedures.

Kaleidoscope is a pioneering substance misuse treatment provider, offering evidence-based treatment and holistic support to individuals who access its services. Staff teams work collaboratively with partner agencies including G4S, Local Health Board, South Wales Police, HMPPS (Her Majesties Prison and Probation Service), PHW (Public Health Wales), and other third sector support agencies.

Clinical services include substitute prescribing for opiate dependence, harm reduction initiatives including the provision of take home Naloxone; family planning and sexual health screening; Blood Borne Virus testing and referral on to specialist support.

  • * Experience and knowledge of working with substance misusers

Desirable

  • * Experience of treating individuals requiring alcohol detoxification
  • * Experience of developing and maintaining successful partnerships with GP's, treatment agencies and other healthcare providers
  • * Experience in undertaking clinical audits

Qualifications

  • RGN/RMN with a valid NMC PIN

  • * One-year post-registration experience in Substance Misuse
  • * Training in Anaphylaxis and BBV
  • * Relevant training in Phlebotomy
