Substance Misuse Nurse - Birchwood

Job responsibilities

The Substance Misuse Nurse will:

• Deliver onsite dispensing and supervision of substitute opiate medication.

• Follow Controlled Drug Policies and Procedures.

• Provide advice, information, and guidance on the management of substance misuse to service users engaged with services.

• Undertake comprehensive clinical assessments

• Agree treatment plans with service users, and review them regularly

• Undertake drug screening (urine, fingerprint and oral).

• Ensure case notes and other statutory records are up to date and kept in accordance with Kaleidoscope policies and procedures / regional information sharing protocols

• Deliver clinical interventions, including HCV testing, HBV immunisation and naloxone training/administration where appropriate and in partnership with Local Health Board and PHW colleagues.

• Deliver subcutaneous injection of buprenorphine (Buvidal).

• Liaise with community pharmacies to ensure prescriptions are in place and monitored appropriately.

• Provide advice, support and training to GPs, pharmacists, and other professionals where appropriate.

• Participate in clinical audits and service reviews.

• Facilitate the transfer of service users from secondary to primary care services, and lead with referrals / liaison with Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) and other community substance misuse treatment providers on leaving Kaleidoscope services.

• Actively encourage service user involvement and feedback and ensure views are considered in informing the development of the service.

• Collate and enter data electronically and contribute to service reports.

Professional Development

• Maintain and develop personal expertise and knowledge by reading, networking and further training to develop professional competence and to contribute to the development of competence within the team.

• Help with the induction and orientation of new staff, volunteers, and students.

• Where relevant, develop and maintain the competencies needed to undertake the role of Substance Misuse Nurse.

• Ensure professional development by seeking regular supervision and annual appraisals.

• Effectively manage own time and prioritise workload, maintaining own administration and accurate personal records regarding travel, diary appointments, TOIL, and expenses incurred.

• Be accountable and responsible for own professional practice, operating in line with professional code of conduct and within organisational policy and procedures.

Service Development

• Ensure a high-quality service is delivered in line with the service specification and regional delivery plans.

• Contribute to the delivery of internal teaching and training programmes.

• Work collaboratively with colleagues to further develop the service

This post has been identifiedas requiring the post holder to provide evidence ofBBVimmunisation status in order to carry out the role effectively. The role may require the post hold to undertake Dry Blood Spot Testing/ Substance Misuse Testing/ Working in NeedleExchange or is a clinical role and therefore Kaleidoscopewishes to ensure that staffare not at risk of infection or transmission of a disease that may affect their own or patient safety. Staff will therefore need to evidence their immunisation history, exemption ornon-responderon commencement of employment or at routine intervals at the request of the Organisation.

Experience

Essential

• * Excellent care co-ordination skills, with experience in undertaking comprehensive clinical assessment, care-planning and treatment reviews with people who have diverse and complex needs
• * Experience and knowledge of working with substance misusers

Desirable

• * Experience of treating individuals requiring alcohol detoxification
• * Experience of developing and maintaining successful partnerships with GP's, treatment agencies and other healthcare providers
• * Experience in undertaking clinical audits

Qualifications

Essential

• RGN/RMN with a valid NMC PIN

Desirable

• * One-year post-registration experience in Substance Misuse
• * Training in Anaphylaxis and BBV
• * Relevant training in Phlebotomy
• * Relevant specialist qualification in alcohol screening and brief advice and substance misuse treatment

• * Planning and Organising - Demonstratable experience of managing tasks and deadlines; able to resolve conflicting priorities whilst demonstrating responsible time management and efficacy of prioritising workload

• * Specialist knowledge and demonstratable competencies in relation to substance misuse, dependency and detoxification

Role Specific Requirements

Essential

• * Full current driving licence and use of a car which is insured for business use
• * Excellent IT skills: competency in Microsoft Word, Email, Excel, PowerPoint and use of internet browsers
• * Prepared to undertake enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) vetting
• * Flexibility to work at multiple locations and flexible working hours
• * Develop and maintain the competencies needed to undertake the role of a Kaleidoscope nurse in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Mental Health Legislation, which incorporates and respects differences in gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, culture and disability, including being accountable and responsible for own professional practice, and within organisational policy and procedures
