We are currently looking for experienced doctors to join our Saint
Michaels Hospice team to participate in the hospice doctor first on call rota
and provide specialist support to patients, families and carers mainly on our
inpatient unit.
Our Hospice Doctors provide effective, high quality medical care and
advice for patients of Saint Michaels and the surrounding community. The
post holder will work closely with other members of the consultantled medical
team, and wider multi-disciplinary team, which includes physiotherapists,
occupational therapists, complementary therapists, pre bereavement workers and
wellbeing support team.
With at least two years post registration experience, candidates will
need an interest in palliative care, ability to work in a multi-disciplinary
team, and a commitment to clinical governance. Strong organisational, report
writing and assessment skills, along with an understanding of collective
responsibility are essential in this role, supported by excellent communication
and interpersonal skills.

Main duties of the job
Medical staffing within the hospice services consists of 2 part time
Palliative Medicine consultants and 3 part time hospice doctors.The medical team
provides specialist palliative care as part of a wider multidisciplinary team;
allied health professionals working within the hospice include a physiotherapist,
occupational therapist, and complementary therapists with a weekly MDT meeting
to plan care.
Patients over the age of 18, with an advanced, progressive, terminal
illness may be admitted to the inpatient unit for symptom control, terminal
care and crises of care. Approximately
150 patients are admitted each year with the average length of stay 22 days and
we discharge approximately 33% of patients.
The medical on call rota is up to a 1 in 7 frequency of weeknights and
weekends. The role of the on-call doctor
is to provide out of hours advice to hospice inpatient unit, community teams,
Harrogate and District Foundation Trust (HDFT) hospital teams and Yorkshire
Ambulance Service (YAS). Face to face
reviews are provided when needed for the hospice inpatients out of hours in the
evenings. The weekday call hours run
from 5pm until 8am. Weekends on call
involve seeing any hospice inpatients that require review on both days from
approximately 9.30 am until all required face to face reviews have been
completed.
