Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Springhill Hospice Specialist Palliative Care Team covering Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated individual. The ideal candidate will provide an overnight sitting service for patients at the end of life.

The Night Sitter will provide care, where appropriate and enable family members to take a break from their caring duties in the knowledge that the patient is being closely monitored and cared for in their own home. Previous experience of caring for patients with palliative care needs and/or patients at the end of life is essential.

The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team providing specialist palliative

care and end of life care to patients and families.

Main duties of the job

To provide an overnight sitting service for patients at the end of life. The Night Sitter will provide care, where appropriate and enable family members to take a break from their caring duties in the knowledge that the patient is being closely monitored and cared for in their own home.

About us

You will normally be based within patients homes around the borough of Rochdale, Middleton and Heywood and on occasion be required to work at Springhill Hospice.

Springhill Hospice provides the following palliative care services to the local adult population who are suffering from the effects of life-limiting and terminal illnesses:

A 16-bed Inpatient unit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.

Hospice at Home Service - supports people who want to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptom management they need to be able to do so.

A Day Therapies Centre for up to 16 patients, 4-days-a-week, offering complementary therapies (e.g. reflexology, aromatherapy and massage); creative and beauty therapies, social activities and clinical support.

Community Service - provides specialist palliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes

A 24-hour Palliative Care Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.

Bereavement Support for relatives following loss.

Counselling Services for patients, carers and relatives, provided by a qualified therapist.

An Education Unit - an in-house training facility for hospice staff and local health and social care professionals, with the main focus of training being on the Springhill Palliative Care Education Passport' (SPCEP) which ensures that core palliative care skills are taught to all grades of staff.

Job responsibilities

AIM:

To provide an overnight sitting service for patients at the end of life. The Night Sitter will provide care, where appropriate and enable family members to take a break from their caring duties in the knowledge that the patient is being closely monitored and cared for in their own home.

DUTIES:

1. To deliver care, as appropriate, and within the scope of individual competency.

2. To provide emotional and psychological support to patient and family.

3. To respond to any change in the patients condition appropriately, calling on the support of the Hospice Nursing team, District Nurses and/or General Practitioner/Bardoc, as required.

4. To maintain appropriate written/electronic, documentation in respect of care given and any significant changes/interventions.

5. To provide effective handover following the night sit to Community Care Coordinator/Liaison or SPCN during the weekend.

6. Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times in accordance with GDPR.

7. Promote privacy and dignity in all aspects of patient care.

8. Requirement at times to work on the in-patient unit at Springhill Hospice, where Community night sit is not required.

9. Flexible working pattern over 7 days including weekend availability.

EDUCATION:

10. To attend Springhill Hospice Induction Training programme, as required.

11. To attend Mandatory Training programmes and on-line training as required.

12. New starter induction on the in-patient unit tailored to each individual.

PERSONNEL/COMMUNICATIONS:

13. To report to senior Hospice staff as appropriate.

14. To participate in the appraisal process.

15. To communicate effectively both verbally and written.

16. To ensure confidentiality of patient and family at all times.

17. To ensure excellent timekeeping.

18. To attend staff meetings.

GENERAL:

19. Read, understand and comply with all Hospice policies and procedures, applying the principles appropriate to the role.
