Job summary
We are looking for an experienced
Catering Assistant to work within ourCatering Team at weekends. We also require some degree of flexibility to
help to provide cover during the week for staff absences such as annual leave
and sickness.
Previous experience of working in
a busy non-domestic kitchen is necessary and,whilst not essential, experience
of working in a healthcare setting would be an advantage, as would some
knowledge of special diets.
You will be well organised and
proactive in your approach to work.Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety
for Caterers is essential along withExcellent
communication and customer service skills.

quality, ensuring that all hygiene regulations are followed. To assist in the
cleaning of all areas where food is prepared or stored, as well as equipment.

This role is based at Springhill Hospice, Rochdale.
Springhill
Hospice providesthe following palliative care services to the local adult
population who are suffering from the effects of life-limiting and terminal
illnesses:
A 16-bed Inpatient
unit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.
Hospice at
Home Service - supports people who
want to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptom
management they need to be able to do so.
A Day
Therapies Centre for up to 16 patients, 4-days-a-week, offering
complementary therapies (e.g. reflexology, aromatherapy and massage);
creative and beauty therapies, social activities and clinical support.
Community
Service - provides specialist
palliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes
A 24-hour Palliative
Care Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.
Bereavement Support for relatives following loss.
Counselling
Services for patients, carers and
relatives, provided by a qualified therapist.
An Education
Unit - an in-house training facility for hospice staff and local health and
social care professionals, with the main focus of training being on the
Springhill Palliative Care Education Passport' (SPCEP) which ensures that core
palliative care skills are taught to all grades of staff.

Functions and Duties:
1.
Prepare
salads, sandwiches and hot snacks in accordance with the daily menu or under
the direction of the Cook in Charge.
2.
Observe
safe working procedures.
3.
Comply
with Health and Hygiene regulations.
4.
Observe
a high standard of personal hygiene and report any risks (eg. stomach upsets
etc.) to the Cook in Charge.
5.
To
clean all working areas and equipment.
6.
Washing
up duties during lunchtime.
7.
To
provide cover for holidays, sickness and catering at Hospice events, as
requested by the Catering Manager.
Background Knowledge:
1.
Must
have detailed knowledge of all matters regarding kitchen hygiene and health,
particularly with regard to the prevention of infection and cross infection.
2.
Recognise
that patients and their carers sometimes behave differently when under stress
and have the ability to remain patient and understanding in such situations.
3.
Fully
aware of the need to respect the patient as a person. Able to handle confidential information
correctly in line with Hospice policy. An awareness that the good name of the
Hospice depends upon the attitudes and actions of staff and volunteers
towards those visiting and being cared for.
Communication:
1.
Be
observant, unusual incidents must be reported to person in charge.
3. Read, understand and comply with all Hospice
policies and procedures, applying the principles as appropriate to role.
4. To be aware of individual specific
responsibilities in respect of the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, in
relation to role.
5. All accidents/incidents must be reported
and the appropriate form completed.
