Job summary

We are looking for an NVQ level 2 (or equivalent) qualified Dispenser, or someone who is willing to be put through training to become a dispenser, to join our busy Dispensary Team.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role will include dispensing medication, checking dispensed items, ordering of stock, dealing with customer enquiries and general Dispensary duties.

The successful applicant will have excellent customer service skills, a conscientious approach and the ability to work flexibly within a small team.

Full training on the Practice's Dispensing systems will be provided.

Driving license is preferred and an advantage.

Abbey Medical Practice is based in the semi rural market town of Evesham and serves over 9000 patients.

We have a professional team, but still manage to maintain that small business feel where everyone is a person first and not just a cog in the machine.

Post Title: Dispenser

Responsible To: Office Manager

Responsible For: Dispensing and associated duties

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. To provide high quality dispensing services.

  1. To dispense medication to patients as directed by the GPs, including making up preparations as necessary to the required strength and volume.

  1. To ensure that orders for stock are placed with the appropriate supplier as and when necessary, and to input incoming stock into the computerised dispensing system, including the accurate recording of type, quantity, strength, batch number and expiry date etc as required. Also, to ensure that stock is stored tidily, in the correct conditions and rotated according to good practice.

  1. To maintain accurate records of dispensing activity, both manual and computerised.

  1. To process requests for repeat prescriptions, ensuring that the prescription/medication is available for collection within 3 working days of the request (and sooner if required). Also, to issue repeat prescriptions/medications to patients as and when required.

  1. To collect prescription charges as appropriate and maintain accurate records of monies received etc.

  1. To assist patients in resolving queries in connection with their medication and obtaining advice from GPs as necessary and appropriate.

  1. To participate in delivering dispensed medication to patients in outlying areas, as and when required.

  1. To work safely at all times, reporting any actual or potential hazards to the Dispensary Supervisor without delay.

  1. Any other duties within the general scope of the post and appropriate to the grading as may be required from time to time. Major changes in duties will be discussed with the post holder before implementation.

Health & safety:

The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the practice health & safety policy, the practice health & safety manual, and the practice infection control policy and published procedures. This will include:

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards
  • Actively reporting of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
  • Keeping own work areas and general / patient areas generally clean, assisting in the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness consistent with the scope of the job holders role
  • Undertaking periodic infection control training (minimum annually)
  • Reporting potential risks identified
