Job summary

Supporting the smooth running of all administrative tasks that are required on a daily basis, assisting both clinical staff and administrative staff where required.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Coding

  1. Review all incoming correspondence and enter, using read codes, pertinent information into the patients electronic medical record in accordance with the coding protocol. This will include data highlighted by clinicians as well as data required to meet contractual obligations.
  2. Organise the medical record of patients whom you are coding, to harmonise problem titles, group symptom development and assign the appropriate status to medical information.
  3. Recognise own knowledge limits and seek advice from clinical or administrative colleagues as appropriate.
  4. To liaise with patients, the public and other healthcare professionals as necessary.
  5. To be proficient at prioritising and organising administrative work generated by hospitals, Health Authority, Primary Care Organisations, patients etc., and to share workload with our other secretaries as necessary.
  6. To initiate outgoing telephone calls to deal with appropriate queries.
  7. Make appointments for doctors and nurses and arrange home visits and respond to patient requests as necessary
  8. Liaise with other agencies, such as the ambulance service, coroner, social services, community services and contractors
  9. Assist in closing and securing the premises at the end of the day
  10. Undertake effective communication with patients in specific clinical situations. Communicate effectively with other team members. Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication.
