Job summary
General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a team within the practice, and provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties, helping to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients experience in the surgery.
Main duties of the job
The GPA will be responsible for overseeing the private medical forms, letters and examinations process within the practice. This may also entail completing basic forms, letters and core elements of some forms for the GPs to approve.
The GPA's job duties may also include sorting clinical post, extracting information from clinical letters and arranging appointments and referrals.
The role may entail preparing patients for their appointments e.g performing basic medical procedures such as urine dipstick, taking blood pressures etc.
The GPA should also be aware of their role in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety, and security in accordance with the Practice Health & Safety Policy. They should also understand the importance of equal opportunities, diversity and professional development. The GPA is expected to participate in annual individual performance reviews, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of their own personal or professional development. They must also take accountability for their actions, contribute to the effectiveness of the team, and work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients needs.

The Surgery is located in the centre of Wrexham with an easy travel network. The practice works closely with the community with the aim of creating a healthier future for our patient population. We have various linked workers: Social Prescribers, Counselling service, Mental Health Practitioner, Physio referring system.
We have approx. 6850 patients with 2 GP partners who are supported with locum cover, 2 Nurses, 1 ANP.

A GPA will support the GP(s) smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration and potentially some clinical tasks on behalf of the GP freeing up their time to focus on the patient.
DUTIES
Overseeing the private medical processes within the practice (e.g. doctors letters, forms and examinations etc.)
Completing basic (non - opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, benefit agency forms etc.
Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions.
Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes.
Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients.
Explaining treatment and procedures to patients.
Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission wi=hile the GP can continue with their consultation.
Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in rediness for the GP appointment.
Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, Height, Weight, ECGs & Phlebotomy.
Summarising of patients records.
Process patients registrations and deductions in accordance with practice protocol.
Effectively support the reception team as need arises to include answering calls and signposting patients appropriately.
