Job summary

We have a maternity leave vacancy for a phlebotomist/HCA at Lyngford Park Surgery until November 2026.

We are a highly rated GP surgery based in the Priorswood area of Taunton with a practice list of 6400 patients. Our premises are excellent, with a newly built extension 3 large treatment rooms, 9 clinic rooms, staff room, downstairs tea bar and ample on site free parking.

A teaching practice, with GP registrars, medical and nurse students there is opportunity for clinical skills advancement and training with monthly educational/clinical/nurse team meetings.

Reporting to and supported by the senior practice nurse you will work alongside our GPs, Clinical Pharmacists and Nursing Team.

This is a temporary position for a minimum of 24 hours a week:

Monday 08:20-14:20

Wednesday 08:20-14:20

Thursday 08:20-14:20

Friday 08:20-14:20

Additional hours are negotiable depending on your skill set.

Main duties of the job

You will require certificated phlebotomy skills and experience to be considered for this role and able to work the shifts required.

About us

Lyngford Park Surgery is a well organised practice on the outskirts of Taunton town. The practice multidisciplinary team includes 5 GPs (3 GP partners), 2 practice nurses, trainee nurse associate, 2 clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technician, plus reception and admin team. We have additional healthcare professionals who work on site with us providing a range of services from physiotherapy, MSK and a paediatric mental health support worker.

The practice is well regarded and supportive of continuing professional development.

We use EMIS as our clinical software and full training will be given if required.

We are an inclusive team, starting each day at 8:20 with a 10 minute huddle in reception for all clinicians and non-clinical staff. Hold monthly team and multidisciplinary team meetings and away days. In July we hosted a practice open day for patients and the local community in conjunction with the Patient Participation Group.

Assisting in and performing routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs e.g. venepuncture, temperature, height and weight, body mass index, blood pressure, ECG, wound care such as dressings and suture removal

  • Obtaining specimens e.g. urine testing as instructed and completing appropriate laboratory forms
  • Administering flu vaccinations and any other agreed injections
  • Assisting GPs while patients undergo minor surgery
  • Participating in anti-coagulation monitoring
  • Promoting healthy lifestyle advice
  • Conducting patient registration medicals
  • INR monitoring service and use of INR Star software
  • Maintaining accurate clinical records
  • Ensuring practice nurse is advised of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks
  • Maintaining GP and nurse rooms, stocking and rotating items as required and maintaining general tidiness and cleanliness
  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs according to the Practice Infection Control and Cold Chain protocol, guidelines and policies
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by a clinician
  • Other duties as required.
