Job summary

The Referral Clerk is responsible for accurately processing and managing patient referrals, ensuring they are efficiently recorded, tracked and directed to the appropriate departments or service providers. This role involves coordinating with both internal teams and external partners to facilitate timely appointments and services. Previous experience with NHS systems, particularly the Electronic Referral Service (ERS), is highly advantageous. The ideal candidate will have strong administrative skills, attention to detail and the ability to handle sensitive patient information professionally.

Main duties of the job

  1. Receive, review and process patient or client referral requests accurately.

  2. Verify referral details, including patient information, eligibility, and required documentation.

  3. Enter referral data into electronic systems, ensuring records are up-to-date.

  4. Coordinate with internal departments and external service providers to schedule appointments or services.

  5. Follow up on pending referrals to ensure timely completion and resolution.

  6. Respond to inquiries from patients, staff, or service providers regarding referral status.

  7. Maintain confidentiality of patient or client information in line with NHS policies and legal requirements.

  8. Generate reports on referral activity and maintain administrative records.

  9. Support the team with general clerical tasks, such as filing, scanning, and record-keeping.
