Job summary
The GP Dispensary Assistant
supports the efficient running of the dispensary within the GP practice, by
assisting with the preparation and supply of medications under the supervision
of the Dispensary Manager. The role ensures that dispensing tasks are carried
out safely, accurately, and in compliance with NHS regulations and dispensary
protocols. The assistant contributes to maintaining stock levels, managing
medication records, and providing excellent customer service to patients.
Main duties of the job
Dispensary Support & Organisation
- Assist in the day-to-day dispensing activities ensuring accuracy and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures.
- Support the safe storage, handling, and disposal of medications including controlled drugs under supervision.
- Help maintain dispensary cleanliness and organise stock areas to support safe and efficient workflows.
Medication Preparation & Supply
- Prepare medication labels and prescriptions following standard procedures.
- Support checking medication stock levels and assist in stock rotation and expiry date monitoring.
- Assist with receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceutical supplies safely.
Customer Service & Communication
- Provide friendly and professional support to patients collecting medications or making enquiries.
- Respond to routine queries and escalate clinical or complex issues to the Dispensary Manager or clinical staff.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and handle sensitive information discreetly.
Record Keeping & Administration
- Assist with accurate recording of medication supplies and stock movements.
- Support dispensary audits by maintaining accurate documentation and reports.
- Help ensure compliance with legal and professional standards including controlled drug records.

Middlestown Medical Centre is a General Practice Partnership open to all patients living within ourpractice boundary of Middlestown and the surrounding areas including including Emley, Flockton and Grange Moor.

The practice is based across 3 sites. The main purpose-built site at Middlestown, has 15 consultation rooms, from which same day and routine medical services are provided as well as reception, administrative and dispensing services. Emley Clinic and Flockton Surgery, both owned by the partnership, facilitate routine appointments and dispensing services.
