Physician Associate

Job summary

Shrewsbury Primary Care Network is looking to employ Physician Associates (PAs) to work in an exciting, rewarding, and demanding environment., you will assess and examine patients, manage a caseload of patients, initiate and interpret investigations and recommend treatment whilst exercising a high level of professional judgment and expertise when delivering care.

The Opportunity

• Employed by the PCN the job will enable you to gain a wide range of experience and exposure to various clinical settings and specialisms. The PA team support the GP teams and primary care staff. The first 6 months of your employment you will be involved in a new service, the Acute Capacity Overflow service. This is a new service that will be run by Shrewsbury PCN for all its member Practices. The purpose being to relieve pressure on GP Practices and other parts of the local healthcare system and provide ease of access for patients.

• Access to other education and training opportunities via the Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin (STW) Training Hub and STW PA Facilitator, you will have opportunities to join various relevant courses to enhance your skill set.

• Part of a system network of PAs you will benefit from a PA peer group which will provide further support for your professional development.

Main duties of the job

The Physician Associate will independently assess, diagnose and manage patients with acute and chronic medical conditions, coordinating with other primary and secondary healthcare services as appropriate. There is an expectation that the Physician Associate will attend to patients within an Acute Capacity overflow Service setting, within a Shrewsbury PCN member Practice, the Patients Home or a Care Home setting, and will coordinate care with other members of the organisation team and external providers.

Whilst the Physician Associate role is not able to prescribe independently at present, the expectation will be to make recommendations regarding drug treatment and medication reviews, and work towards this qualification when the opportunity becomes available.
