Job summary

We are looking for a friendly, resilient, experienced Phlebotomist to join our a forward-thinking GP practice.The successful candidate will be working with our clinical team to deliver the best primary care healthcare service to our patients. More specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for the normal primary care phlebotomist duties. The successful candidate will need to have a flexible approach to working and be prepared to work across both sites. Having their own transport would be essential due to this.

Main duties of the job

Duties include: (but are not limited to):

  • Venipuncture;
  • Preparing lab work orders for lab testing;
  • Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory.
  • To collect blood samples from patients in accordance with agreed practice policy
  • To generate blood request forms ICE or from previously stored by clinical staff
  • Measuring and recording:blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, temperature, height and weight, BMI
  • Prepare consulting/treatment rooms, and maintain stocks of equipment
  • To maintain phlebotomy cover within the agreed hours of service
  • To undertake phlebotomy within the clinical environment
  • Maintaining accurate patient records
  • Ordering stock items.
  • Act as a chaperone when requested

We have a strong ethos of continuity of patient care, team work and peer support. We have a list size of circa 8,000 patients. We currently operate with a multi-disciplinary team who are supported by a hard-working dedicated admin team.

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities: To assist in patient care and practice related duties as delegated by and under the indirect supervision of a registered healthcare professional where training and competencies have been completed and assessed. The post holder will work collaboratively with the General Practice team to meet the needs of patients and their carers, following policy and procedures.

  • Identify patients and their personal information using their ID, documents or other means
  • Determine the right venipuncture method based on patient age, health etc.
  • Reassure patients and help them relax
  • Find veins that are suitable for puncture
  • Draw blood using sterilized needles, vials and other equipment
  • Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples
  • Label samples correctly and send them for testing
  • Measuring and recording: blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, temperature, height and weight, BMI
  • Answer patient questions and provide useful information
  • Keep accurate records on fluid specimens and tests
  • Adhere to all relevant health and safety standards while working
  • Stock ordering and ensuring rooms are compliant with infection control

Requirements and skills:

  • Experience with effective puncture techniques
  • Understanding of proper patient identification methods
  • Knowledge of legal requirements about drawing blood, handling fluid samples and use of relevant medical equipment and material
