Job summary

Dudley Wood Surgery is seeking an experienced and motivated Practice Nurse to join our friendly and supportive GP surgery team on a part-time basis.

Working Hours

  • Wednesday: 8:00am 6:00pm (30-minute unpaid break)
  • Thursday: 12:00pm 6:00pm

Total working hours: 15.5 hours per week

Main duties of the job

About us

Dudley Wood Surgery is a small, friendly GP practice located in the heart of our local community, caring for approximately 2,700 patients. We are looking for a dedicated Practice Nurse to join our team and play a key role in delivering high-quality patient care.

This is a 16-hour post, working Wednesdays and Thursdays. The successful candidate will be the sole Practice Nurse, supported by a close-knit multidisciplinary team.

The role is based in General Practice and is ideal for a nurse who enjoys working autonomously while being well supported by colleagues. You will contribute to a range of nursing services appropriate to a small but busy practice, with the opportunity to build strong, ongoing relationships with our patients.

Job Summary:

To assist medical personnel in the care of Practice patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team. Care will be provided both in the Practice and community setting.

Job Responsibilities:

Providing assessment, screening and treatment services and health education advice

  • Providing nursing treatments to patients in participation with general practitioners or independently to agreed protocols.
  • Provide general and specific chronic disease management to patients (within agreed protocols) with referral to general practitioners as necessary.
  • Advise patients on general health care and minor ailments with referral to GPs as necessary.

Other Duties:

  • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs
  • Cytology
  • Wound care/ ulcer care/ Doppler
  • Removal of Sutures
  • Travel advice and vaccines
  • ECGs
  • Long Term Condition management
  • Routine immunisations/Childhood immunisations
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
  • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
  • Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to GPs as appropriate

  • Maintaining GP and Nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as required

Pathological specimens and investigatory procedures:

  • Following appropriate training, undertake the collection, storage and despatch of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs, smears etc and ensure the cleanliness of any equipment so used. Perform any investigatory procedures requested by the GPs.

Administrative and professional responsibilities:

  • Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the Practice team.
  • Ensure accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes on the clinical computer systems as appropriate.
  • Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the Practice.
  • Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.
  • Attend and participate in Practice meetings as required.
  • Assist in the formulation of Practice philosophy, strategy and policy and develop appropriate protocols.
  • Maintain a notice board in the waiting area designated for patient health care education.

Student/Staff education and training:

  • Participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines and the induction of all members of practice staff with special responsibility for nursing staff.

Liaison:

  • Maintain effective liaison with other agencies and staff concerned with patient care and with all other disciplines within the Practice, with appropriate regard to confidentiality.

Professional Development:

  • Maintain continued professional education by attendance at courses and study days as deemed useful or necessary for professional development.
