Job summary

We are recruiting an established Health Care Assistant with a keen interest in wound care and dressings to join our friendly team at Oakwood and Bull Farm Surgery.

Main duties of the job

Under the supervision of a qualified nurse, to provide clerical and nursing assistant support for the whole Nursing Team in the treatment, preventative care, health screening and education of patients within the practice and community setting.

Working pattern to be agreed. Will require additional enhanced access working hours on a Friday evening until 8pm and Saturday morning on a rota basis.

Oakwood Surgery is a busy training practice, rated 'good' at our last CQC inspection, split over two sites.

5 GP Partners

4 Salaried GP's

7 Nurses/HCA's

1 Pharmacist Prescriber

1 Practice Manager

20 Receptionists

10 Other administrative staff

We also work collaboratively with a team of pharmacists, FCP's and paramedics to provide a multi-disciplinary service to our 16,000 patients.

As a training practice we are passionate about supporting our team to learn new skills and develop in their role to better meet the needs of our patients.

Job responsibilities

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical care:

  • Work alongside the clinician(s) in the provision of patient care
  • Undertake and record the following tasks:
  • Undertake routine dressings in accordance with practice guidelines
  • Measurement of height and weight, helping patients undress
  • Urinalysis
  • Measure of blood pressure, temperature and pulse
  • Peak flow measurements
  • Spirometry
  • Recording of ECGs
  • Venepuncture
  • DMARD bloods and annual Rheumatoid Arthritis reviews using the Frax tool and Qrisk
  • Testing of clinical specimens and recording results
  • Blood sugar measurements
  • Suture and clip removal in accordance with practice guidelines
  • Recognise changes in the patients observations that must be reported and acted upon.
  • Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the practice team.
  • Act as a chaperone.
  • Appreciate the principles of Healthy Living.
  • Complete Cardiovascular, NHS Health and New patient checks,
  • Provide relevant health promotion literature for patients.
  • Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
  • Assist clinicians in the emergency management of patients.
  • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
  • Monitoring adequate Stocks of vaccine and ensure good stock rotation.
  • Community, Nursing Home and elderly visits in accordance with the practice guidelines.
  • Give Flu vaccinations and B12 injections upon completion of accredited course.
  • Ear Irrigation following completion of accredited course.

  • Contribute new ideas to improve patient care.
  • Instruct patients in appropriate techniques or tasks.
  • Tidy clinical areas in direct response to infection control and Health & Safety standards.

Clinical Practice Leadership

  • Work effectively in a team and where appropriate participate in clinical meetings
  • Interact with patients and colleagues in a professional manner.

Clinical Practice Development

  • Maintain set standards of organisation in clinical rooms.
  • Take appropriate action if standards are not being met.
  • Recognise potential areas of conflict, preventing where possible and reporting to senior members of staff if unable to cope.
  • Storage of vacs
  • Collect clinical waste and ensure that it is appropriately stored until disposal.
  • Have in place programmes and systems to ensure appropriate Continual Professional development is maintained in line with needs of the post.

Information Recording

  • Input of information onto the clinical system.
  • Use of computer for patient searches to assist with clinic and recall system
  • Pro active in assisting the practice to reach all QOF and service level agreements requirements / targets
