GP Assistant

Job summary

The post holder supports the GP(s) to ensure the efficient provision of medical services and clinics by performing several more routine administrative and clinical duties. This will allow the GP(s) to utilise their own time more effectively towards greater patient focused activities.

Utilising the NHS Health Education England GPA Competency Framework, the post holder working within general practice/primary care will provide capabilities within care, administration, clinical, communications and health records management.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties:

The GP Assistant supports GPs by performing routine administrative and clinical tasks, enabling GPs to focus on more complex patient care. Key responsibilities include:

Clinical duties: Taking patient histories and basic observations, conducting urinalysis, blood pressure checks, ECGs and phlebotomy. Supporting GPs with wound care, immunisations and patient examinations.

Administrative duties: Managing clinical post and correspondence, prioritising actions for GPs, and signposting letters to appropriate clinical staff. Coding medical information and updating patient records. Completing non-clinical elements of forms such as insurance applications and benefits forms.

Patient support: Arranging appointments, referrals, clinical tests and follow-ups. Explaining treatment procedures to patients and liaising with external agencies on behalf of GPs.

General responsibilities: Contributing to public health campaigns, maintaining a clean and organised workspace, and participating in continuous professional development and mandatory training.

Job responsibilities

Primary responsibilities:

The following are the core responsibilities of the GP Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

a.Preparing patients, prior to seeing the GP(s), by taking a brief history and basic observations.

b. Conducting urinalysis, taking blood pressure

c. Performing ECGs

d.Performing phlebotomy

e.Explaining treatment procedures to patients

f.Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP(s) regarding actions required

g.Signposting some received correspondence to others, e.g., clinical pharmacist, practice nurse

h.Extracting all the required information from clinical letters, applying medical codes as required and adding these to patient notes

i.Support practice patients by arranging appointments, onward referrals, clinical tests and follow up appointments.

j.Completing basic (non-opinion) forms in addition to some elements of forms for the GP(s) to approve such as insurance forms, mortgage applications, Department for Works and Pensions benefits forms and other as appropriate

k.Supporting GP(s) in liaising with external agencies such as helping to arrange patient admission while the GP(s) continue with the consultation.

l.Supporting the GP(s) with wound care and immunisations

m. Attending a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed

n. Contributing to public health campaigns (e.g., flu clinics) through advice or direct care

o.Maintaining a clean, tidy and effective working area at all times

Secondary responsibilities

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the GP Assistant may be requested to

a. Demonstrate the ownership of responsibility for personal development, learning and performance

b. Demonstrate performance of skills and activities to others undertaking similar work

c. Attend relevant annual updates and shared practice learning

d.Complete all required PCN mandated training

e.Undertake any tasks consistent with the level of the post and the scope of the role, ensuring that work is delivered in a timely and effective manner

Duties may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the post or the level of responsibility.
