Practice Nurse - Potterells Medical Centre

Job summary

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patient as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the healthcare team.

We are looking for:

  • - Registered healthcare professional with NMC registration
  • - Strong clinical reasoning skills and sound knowledge of current guidelines
  • - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well within a team and support fellow colleagues.
  • - Commitment to ongoing professional development and high-quality patient care.
  • - General Practice/Treatment Room nurse experience is desirable but not essential.

Main duties of the job

Job Responsibilities:

  • - Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by the senior nursing staff and GPs.
  • - Basic wound care / ulcer care.
  • - Administering child vaccines in line with guidelines.
  • - Cytology
  • - Removal of sutures
  • - New patient medicals / carer medicals
  • - Urinalysis
  • - ECGs
  • - Peak flow readings
  • - Blood pressure measurements
  • - Ear syringing
  • - Routine immunisations
  • - Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinicians
  • - Assisting GPs with minor surgery, coil fittings and other medical procedures
  • - Requesting basic pathology tests (Urine culture, swabs ect)
  • - Chronic disease management (Asthma/COPD)
  • - Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
  • - Willingness to complete Contraception and HRT reviews
  • - Willingness to complete non-medical prescribing qualification
Other tasks:
  • - Participation in administrative systems in the practice
  • - Maintaining accurate medical records at all times
  • - Attend and participate in practice meetings when required
  • - On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits

About us

About Us:

We are currently a 6 Partner practice based in Welham Green. We also have 5 Salaried GPs, 5 Nurses, 2 HCAs, 2 Pharmacists, a Pharmacy Technician as well as a range of ARRS staff and admin support. We cover 2 sites, and this role will work across both. Our main site is at Potterells Medical Centre in Welham Green, and we also cover Hertfordshire University with our second site being the Medical Centre on College Lane Campus.

We are ideally looking for 2.5 to 3 days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am-4.30 or 5pm. Weekly hours would therefore range between 17 hours to 22.5 hours per week depending on shift preference.

Salary £20-24 per hour depending on experience.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Practice Nurse in delivering health services:

a. Support the Infection Prevention Control (IPC) lead and work to the IPC Policy

b. Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patient need

c. Support in the long-term condition management within the organisation, including being involved with quality improvement and assurance initiatives

d. Support public health and screening programmes, including immunisations, vaccinations, and cervical screening and also provide opportunistic health promotion advice

e. Embed population health management approaches within general practice, targeting health inequalities and improving access

f. As required, provide routine nursing care to patients in accordance with clinical based evidence, NICE and the NSF

g. Support new-to-practice nurses and other healthcare professionals within the organisation

h. Teach and advise patients and their families on how to manage their condition

i. Participate in clinical audits and research projects and implements changes as required, including supporting with the development, and updating of practice protocols/guidelines and procedures locally

j. Work within national and local protocols where these exist

k. Recognise the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred

l. Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements

m. Be aware of duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children

n. Participate in the management of patient complaints when requested to do so and participate in the identification of any necessary learning brought about through incidents and near-miss events

o. Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes

p. Support the practice team with the reviewing and implementation of practice policies and protocols, ensuring conformance to extant legislation

q. Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed

r. Provide wound care (ulcer/Doppler, etc.) to patients

s. Maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation ensuring that codes are used effectively

t. Contribute to practice targets (QOF, etc.), complying with relevant guidance

u. Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times

v. Chaperone patients where necessary

w. Support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies

There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels
