Job summary

Northway Medical Practice are keen to appoint a Physician Associate to cover maternity leave and work with our existing PA team, with proven experience in a busy GP environment to join the PCN team. The PA will support delivery of care across our PCN although will mainly be based in one Practice. This is an exciting opportunity to help set the future direction of the PA role within the Primary Care environment and, as an integral member of the PCN clinical team, to contribute to the continuing development of innovative patient care by the wider clinical team.

The Sedgley, Coseley and Gornal (SCG) Primary Care Networks Physicians Associate is responsible to the wider network although will based in a single practice site. The PAs will work together as a team and as part of the wider multidisciplinary Primary Care team. Reporting to their practice based supervisor and GP Partner, the PA has the following duties and responsibilities and is required to demonstrate the skills and attributes

The SCG Primary Care Network is comprised of eight GP practices (Ridgeway Medical Practice, Lower Gornal Medical Practice, Northway Medical Centre, Coseley Medical Centre, Woodsetton Medical Centre, The Greens Health Centre, Castlemeadows Surgery and Bath Street Medical Practice) serving a patient population of 57,000. The Practices are highly collaborative and share a deep commitment to providing outstanding clinical care to their diverse demographic of patients. Many of the practices are teaching practices, demonstrating a strong commitment to education and development.

In addition to Physicians Associates, our PCN has recruited other pan-PCN roles including Clinical Pharmacists, Paramedics, GP Assistants and Health and Well Being coaches and has exciting plans to continue to expand the team of multi-disciplinary roles.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Establish and maintain the highest standards of clinical care by the PA team across all PCN practices.

Committed to ongoing professional development.

Provide first point of contact for patients presenting with undifferentiated, undiagnosed problems and with established chronic diseases including ongoing monitoring.

Support the multidisciplinary PCN team provide high quality care to our care home and housebound patients.

Provide safe clinical decision making and expert care for patients.

Take comprehensive patient histories and conduct physical examinations. They will establish a working diagnosis and management plan (in partnership with the patient).

Consult and refer patients to other appropriate healthcare professionals both internally and externally, as required.

Deliver integrated patient centred-care through appropriate working with the wider primary care and social care networks.

Undertake clinical audits.

Participate in all treatment and preventative healthcare services in the practice as delegated and agreed by the supervising clinicians(s).

Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment.

Request and interpret results of laboratory investigations when necessary.

Instruct and educate patients in preventative health care.

Fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes.

Contribute to the clinical development of the practices in the PCN by establishing and developing appropriate systems to manage common chronic medical conditions, ensuring compliance with NSF guidelines, QOF and other quality initiatives as required.

Support delivery of PCN wide initiatives in delivering patient care as these evolve with the development of the PCN and its integration with other local stakeholders.

Other Duties:

Work within the policies, protocols and procedures of the PCN and its practices.

Maintain a good working knowledge of health and safety procedures.

Maintain accurate administration systems and participate in data collection/analysis as required.

Participate in regular supervision sessions and appraisals with your line manager. Attend training and development activities as identified and participate in meetings as required.

Work flexibly to meet the needs of the PCN practices and their patients.

To undertake any other duties as may be agreed from time to time.

  • To have completed the Physician Associate Postgraduate Diploma/Masters from an accredited UK university and registered with the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR) held by the Faculty of Physician Associates (FPA). OR Must be a Member of the Faculty of Physician Associates at the RCP, which includes registration on the UK Physician Associate Register (the PA Managed Voluntary Register) until such time that statutory regulation of PAs is achieved
