Station Lane Medical centre is a friendly, patient centred GP surgery with a list size of around 8,200 patients. We are a small, team orientated practice with a strong emphasis on mutual support, open communication and safe, sustainable working. Our aim is to provide high quality, holistic care while looking after the wellbeing of our staff.

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated General Practice Nurse to join our welcoming multidisciplinary team, which includes GPs, nurses, HCAs and a supportive administrative and management team.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the role

Is a Registered Nurse (NMC) with primary care or relevant experience

Has good clinical skills and a patientcentred approach

Works well as part of a small, supportive team

Communicates clearly and professionally with patients and colleagues

Is organised, reliable and able to work independently within agreed protocols

Must have previous GP surgery experience in the management of longterm conditions (e.g. diabetes, COPD, asthma, hypertension) within agreed protocols

Treatment room work, including wound care, dressings, ECGs, injections and vaccinations

Cervical cytology

Childhood and adult immunisations

Contraception and sexual health (within competence and training)

Health promotion and lifestyle advice

Participation in QOF and other clinical audits / recall systems

Contribution to infection prevention and control and practice clinical governance

Contribution in waste management and audits

Support in cryotherapy delivery

The practice nurse will work as part of the primary healthcare team providing Personal Medical Services to the patients of practice.

Job responsibilities

  • Assistin and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs

  • Cytology

  • Wound care / ulcer care

  • Complex dressings

  • Removal of Sutures/ Clips

  • Travel Clinic

  • ECGs

  • Peak Flow Readings

  • Venepuncture

  • Ear syringing

  • Routine immunisations

  • Ordering of immunisations

  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician

  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings

  • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs

  • Contraception advice and reviews.

  • Asthma and COPD reviews.

  • Diabetes reviews, management plans and referrals required for diabetic care.

  • Cardiovascular review, giving advice on prevention, healthy lifestyle and medication options.

Other tasks will include:

  • Clean and sterilise equipment/ Infection control audits and compliance

  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs

  • Clinical waste management audits

  • Maintaining GP and Nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as required

  • Monitoring fridges and ensuring cold chain.

  • Keeping up to date with the latest guidance on vaccinations and PGDs.

  • Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being examined by another clinician.

  • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms

  • Check and maintain emergency bag

  • Ordering of Health Promotion Literature

  • Ordering of stock from the Hospital

  • Participation in administrative systems in the Practice including ensuring recalls are moved on and correct.

  • At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records

  • To advise senior nurses of potential problems or errors within a range of assigned tasks or GP on call.

  • Attend and participate in any Practice meetings when required including target afternoons.

  • On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits

    The post-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and management their own and others health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice Health & Safety policy, the practice Health & Safety manual, and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures.

    This will include (but will not be limited to):

    • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines

    • Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines

    • Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process, including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements

    • Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice including provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff

    • Responsible for hand hygiene across the practice

    • Ownership of infection control and clinically based patient care protocols, and implementation of those protocols across the practice

    • Active observation of current working practices across the practice in relation to infection control, cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that procedures are followed and weaknesses / training needs are identified, escalating issues as appropriate
