Job summary

General practice assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, providing a support role by carrying out administrative tasks which help to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of the surgery.

Main duties of the job

A GPA will support the GP(s) smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration and clinical tasks on behalf of the GP freeing up their time to focus on the patient.

About us

CLICK (Chard, Ilminster and Langport) Primary Care Network (PCN) is located in South Somerset with 6 GP practices and a diverse population spread across town and rural locations. CLICK has a population size of around 50,000 patients.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Organising all clinical posts and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some posts to the appropriate clinician, i.e., clinical pharmacists etc.

2. Extracting all information from clinical letters that need coding and adding to notes.

3. Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow-up appointments for patients.

4. Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs & phlebotomy.

5. Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits, agency forms, etc.

6. Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies, e.g. getting an on-call doctor on the phone to ask for advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s).

Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work
