SUMMARY OF ROLE:

We are seeking a proactive and compassionate Nursing Associate to join our general practice team. This role bridges the gap between healthcare assistants and registered nurses, supporting the delivery of high-quality, holistic care to patients across the lifespan. Working under the supervision of registered nurses or GPs, the Nursing Associate will contribute to health promotion, disease prevention, and the management of long-term conditions. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, a patient-centred approach, and a commitment to continuing professional development within primary care.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver high-quality clinical care and support within scope of competence.

  • Perform clinical observations (e.g. BP, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation).

  • Undertake venepuncture, wound care, dressings, ECGs, and assist in minor procedures.

  • Administer immunisations and vaccinations (e.g. flu, shingles, pneumonia).

  • Support chronic disease management, NHS Health Checks, and medication reviews.

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential patient records.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and the wider multidisciplinary team.

  • Promote health and wellbeing through advice on smoking cessation, diet, and lifestyle.

  • Uphold professional standards, working within NMC and Nursing Associate guidelines.

  • Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures; maintain clean, safe clinical areas.

  • Participate in audits, quality improvement, and safety compliance checks.

  • Support safeguarding of children, young people, and vulnerable adults, escalating concerns appropriately.

About us

We are a busy, rural practice providing a service to a resilient rural community on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. We have a growing list size of 5,600 patients.

We proudly operate as a training practice and our multidisciplinary team includes 4 GP partners plus salaried GP, physician associates, a strong nursing team, first contact physiotherapists, a mental health worker, clinical pharmacists, a care co-ordinator and social prescribers.

We have an effective team of administrators who support the team with operational administration, patient services and correspondence management.

We also have a successful team of dispensary assistants and support staff who run a popular dispensary service to 90% of our practice population, this includes a delivery service to patients who would usually struggle to collect their regular medications.

  • Carry out wound care and dressings under supervision or within scope of competence.
  • Administer immunisations and vaccinations (including flu, shingles, and pneumonia if trained and competent).
  • Support and contribute to chronic disease management (e.g. diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension).
  • Conduct NHS Health Checks and basic health assessments.
  • Carry out ECGs and assist with minor procedures where needed.
  • Support medication reviews and administer medications under appropriate direction.
  • Support the delivery of cervical screening (with appropriate training).
  • Provide health promotion advice (e.g. smoking cessation, healthy lifestyle).

Communication and Patient Interaction:

  • Build and maintain professional relationships with patients, carers, and families.
  • Act as a point of contact for patients needing health advice within scope of practice.
  • Ensure clear communication with the wider multidisciplinary team.

Professional Practice and Accountability:

  • Work within the scope of NMC code and Nursing Associate standards of proficiency.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential patient records (e.g. on EMIS or SystmOne).
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and service development.
  • Escalate concerns appropriately to registered nurses or GPs.
  • Engage in reflective practice and ongoing professional development.

Teamwork and Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, HCAs, and other practice staff.
  • Contribute to case reviews, MDT meetings, and safeguarding discussions as appropriate.
  • Support training and supervision of students or junior staff (within competence).

Infection Prevention and Safety:

  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and procedures.
  • Maintenance of clinical environments making sure they are safe, clean, and well-stocked.
  • Ensuring the practice is compliant with infection prevention and control through conducting regular audits/checks.
  • Ensure the emergency bag is checked and maintained in line with practice protocols.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and safeguarding concerns in line with practice policies.
