Job summary

We are looking for a compassionate and motivated fully qualified Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive General Practice team. As an HCA in a GP setting, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care and supporting the clinical team in the day-to-day running of the practice.

This role is ideal for someone with previous HCA experience, preferably in primary care, who is enthusiastic, organised, and committed to making a difference in the lives of patients.

The position is full time and the successful candidate will be required to work across both of our sites in Rishton and Great Harwood so a full UK driving licence is essential.

Main duties of the job

To support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

Working under the guidance of the nursing team and GPs, you will carry out a range of clinical tasks such as but not limited to phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, health checks, vaccinations (if trained), and assisting with chronic disease management. You will also contribute to the overall patient experience by providing reassurance, health promotion advice, and practical support throughout their visit.

About us

We are a medium sized training practice, currently caring for a population of approximately 9000 patients. We have 3 GP partners, 1 Salaried GP, a Practice Nurse and Health Care Assistant team and of course our Admin and Reception teams. We are a Total Triage practice and host various ARRS roles within our local Hyndburn Rural Primary Care Team (PCN). We are based across 2 clinical sites (Rishton & Great Harwood). Our last CQC rating was "Good".

The post holder works under direct supervision of the practice nurses and works collaboratively with the general practice team in the service and delivery of care management to the practice population.

Special requirements of the post:

An ability to use their own judgement, resourcefulness, common sense, and local knowledge, to respond to patients enquiries and requests while adhering to Practice limitations.

An understanding and acceptance of own capabilities and awareness of own limitations.

Key responsibilities:

Clinical duties:

To undertake, record and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received.

Assist in assessment and surveillance of patient health and wellbeing to include:

blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, temperature, height and weight, BMI.

New patient medicals

Phlebotomy

Urinalysis

ECGs

Dietary advice

Basic first aid

Perform simple dressings

Ear syringing

B12 Injections

Prepare and maintain treatment room environment and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions

Vaccinations and immunisations under the direction of the practice nurse (if qualified).

Act as a chaperone when required

General duties:

Ensure fridge temperatures are checked and recorded daily.

Ensure equipment is cleaned, sterilised, and stored appropriately.

Ensure the clinical room is always clean and tidy.

Administration duties:

Experience of Emis web.

Maintain stock levels.

Assist with audits (relevant to own workload).

Education and Training:

To participate is any training and development relevant to your role, both in-house and externally as required.

Communication:

Demonstrate sensitive communication styles to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment.

Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, cultural background, and preferred ways of communicating.

Act as an advocate when representing patients and colleagues.
