Job summary

Central Surgery is seeking an experienced, motivated and forward thinking nurse manager to join our nursing team. This person will work approximately 30 hours per week over 4 days. The role will be split between practice nursing sessions and managerial sessions, dependant on organisational need.

Main duties of the job

In this pivotal role, you will lead and mentor the nursing team, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care, safety, and professional development. You will oversee infection control, cold chain processes, clinical audits, and policy implementation, while contributing to governance, quality improvement, and service innovation.

This role is ideal for a dynamic nurse leader with strong clinical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a passion for continuous improvement in primary care.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Nurse Manager responsibilities

a) Provide line management to the nursing team, including providing annual appraisals, 121s, team meetings, managing annual leave and absence

b) Ensuring competencies and training are up to date amongst the team

c) Coordinate the nursing team rota, ensuring sufficient staff are available during core hours to meet patient needs

d) Lead the planning and implementation of changes within the nursing team

e) To act as the Infection Prevention Control (IPC) lead and to work to the IPC Policy providing audits, training, support and evidence of compliance to the practice manager

f) To work alongside the practice manager, to implement new services and ensure compliance (maximise practice income and achievement) for established services

g) Develop and review audits, protocols and processes, effectively utilising the audit cycle

h) Develop, review and implement nursing protocols in conjunction with the partners

i) Continually review clinical practices, responding to national policies and initiatives where appropriate

j) Participate in the review of significant and near-miss events applying a structured approach, i.e., root cause analysis

k) Delegate clinical responsibilities appropriately (ensuring safe practice and the task is within the scope of practice of the individual)

l) Attend practice meetings and feedback to the nursing team as required

Practice Nurse Responsibilities

a) Wound care / ulcer care / Doppler

b) Vaccination programmes for adults and children

c) Injections

d) Phlebotomy

e) Cervical smears

f) Travel clinics

g) Dementia reviews

h) Chronic disease management

i) ECGs

j) Hypertension Management

k) Opportunistic health promotion

l) Prescribe medication for patients in accordance with PGDs and own scope of practice

m) Review medications with patients to enhance compliance and provide guidance regarding side effects and dosages in the use of prescribed and over-the-counter medications

n) Ensure read codes are used effectively

o) Maintenance and use of chronic disease registers

p) Prioritise health issues and intervene appropriately

q) Support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies

r) Recognise, assess and refer patients presenting with mental health needs

s) Liaise with external services/agencies to ensure the patient is supported appropriately (vulnerable patients etc.)
