Job summary

We are hoping to recruit an enthusiastic & highly motivated Practice Based Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly and growing practice team. We are a 4 site practice providing high quality care to 17,000 patients in the Longton & Meir areas of Stoke On Trent. You will be working alongside our practice team and practice pharmacist supporting medicines management processes within the practice.

Main duties of the job

The post holder must be registered with the GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician

You will provide specialist pharmaceutical technical services, professional advice and direct support to GPs, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, HCAs, and Reception/Administrative Staff

You will liaise with patients, clinical and non-clinical staff, practice, hospital and community pharmacists and patients care teams, to improve the pharmaceutical care of patients.

This role is an opportunityto develop the role of the Pharmacy Technician with the GP practice setting to maximise support to all Clinical and Non-clinical staff to improve patient care in relation to all aspects of medicines and their impact

Job description

Job responsibilities

Main areas of responsibility include:

To act as a Technical Pharmacy Advisor to Practice Clinicians

To advise Management and other non-clinical staff concerning administrative aspects of medicines management as appropriate

To assess all non-routine repeat prescription requests identified by solving queries where possible and producing prescriptions for clinical review and signature

To address the following areas without the need to consult a GP in each case (although clinical support and advice will always be available if required):

Review dates following medication reviews

Addition/removal of medications following receipt of a discharge summary

Effecting medication changes as per secondary care and community clinic letters

Changing acute medications to repeat where appropriate- e.g. A new medication that a GP/Nurse Practitioner has commenced and there is subsequently evidence for the need for the item on a repeat basis and necessary tests/checks have confirmed this

Provide independent information to patients with regard to medicines and prescribing changes, initiating further support from other healthcare professionals where appropriate

Audit prescribing procedures in both a holistic manner and also in specific medicines categories, interpreting audit information in order to advise the clinical team on improving prescribing policies, patterns and procedures

Participate in review and setting of policies relating to medicines management and prescribing

Implement initiatives to reduce waste of prescribed medicines

Participate in initiatives to improve safe and quality prescribing

Work with the practice pharmacist to deliver incentive schemes

Participate in initiatives to improve repeat prescribing processes

Support to implement procedural and service changes relating to prescribing to ensure best practice is adopted in accordance with local guidelines, legislation, directives and safety updates e.g. NICE, MRHA etc.

Participate in interanl & external meetings where appropriate

  • GCSE or equivalent in both Maths and English at Grade C or above.
  • Diploma Level 3 or equivalent in Pharmacy Services.
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Must be prepared to complete the CPPE General Practice Pharmacy Technician Training Pathway

Desirable

  • Has already completed the CPPE General Practice Pharmacy Technician Training Pathway or an equivalent training scheme

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working on own initiative within professional boundaries and with national/local protocols and legislation.
  • Experience of responding directly to enquiries from patients as well as health and social care professionals
  • Using IT systems
  • Knowledge of standards of conduct of pharmacy professionals
  • Awareness of limits of own knowledge and competency
  • Understanding of clinical governance and quality measures

Desirable

  • Previous experience working within Primary Care.
  • Experience of analysing prescribing data
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
