Job summary

To provide a safe, efficient and accurate dispensing service of medication to eligible patients.

To lead, support and motivate the Dispensing Team, across 3 sites, and be directly responsible for team culture, development, training, appraisal and review.

To ensure effective financial control of the dispensary and find opportunities to drive efficiency, profitability and innovation.

To engage regularly with Management team and partners to ensure continuous communication.

We are ideally looking for up to 30 hours a week.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out all general duties associated with the dispensary and the related administration, maintaining accuracy and efficiency.
  • To use judgement, resourcefulness, common sense and local knowledge, to respond to patients enquiries, requests and complaints.
  • To negotiate contracts and discounts with suppliers and wholesalers.
  • To ensure timely and accurate ordering of regular and seasonal medication and actively look for opportunities to reduce waste.
  • To review, update, share and embed operating procedures, protocols and policies relating to the safe and accurate dispensing of medication.
  • To manage the financial monitoring and returns, end of month submissions and claims associated with running the dispensary.
  • To optimise the use of the clinical system (SystmOne) using the data to identify trends and run patient reports and act upon drug alerts
  • To use digital solutions to improve patient communication and clinical records.
  • To implement process improvements for stock control
  • Engage in quality improvements, audits and DSQS assessments
  • To host regular dispensary team meetings to share developments, ideas and concerns
  • To attend inter-team meetings and help manage whole practice projects

About us

Our 3 partner practice has a patient population of over 11000+ patients and a staff of 2 further salaried GPs, 3 ANPs and a full complement of nurses, HCAs, dispensers, receptionists and admin staff all working alongside a growing number of additional PCN roles.

Based in the Forest of Dean, our Cinderford surgery serves the surrounding town and rural communities. In spacious, environmentally friendly new premises, we occupy the first purpose-built, dementia-friendly surgery in the UK. Patients can also access a full range of services at our branch site in the local village of Ruardean & Westbury-on-Severn

  • To assist with preparation for CQC inspection

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
  • Interest in and ability to undertake further education, training and development
  • Minimum of 2 years Dispensing experience
  • Working in a dispensary with sufficient experience to meet DSQS standards
  • Managing others developing staff, managing absence
  • Previous experience of office systems
  • Good skills in spreadsheets, word processing, databases, e-mail and internet
  • Ability and confidence to trouble shoot, liaise with helplines and assist others
  • Good interpersonal skills with patients and staff
  • Pleasant and efficient telephone manner
  • Good numerical skills, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Good letter, minutes and report writing
