Job summary

To undertake duties and work under the direction of the clinical team in areas where the Health Care Assistant is both competent and confident. The Health Care Assistant also supports the delivery of the service by providing administrative support. The role requires initiative and good judgement but will always be supported by other more senior clinicians on duty who will be available to advise.

Main duties of the job

The role involves performing routine health screening and measurements including: blood pressure; weight, height and body mass index; urinalysis; pulse rate and rhythm; ECG; glucose tolerance test; and peak flow readings. We will train a HCA to have an informed understanding of normal values and report appropriately to the clinical team.

There are patient health checks, recording previous medical history, family history and current medications.

Provision of education and health promotion to patients and ensure test samples are appropriately labelled and packaged for transportation to the laboratory.

Our HCA's collect lifestyle data from patients, including smoking status, alcohol consumption and exercise.

We expect HCA's to ensure patients comfort, safety and dignity and understand the importance of confidentiality and ethical issues. Our HCA's prepare clinical areas and instruments for Nursing Procedures in line with Infection Control Procedures. We expect a HCA following training to act as a chaperone when required for other clinicians and assist the Practice Nurses or GP in performance of clinical procedures and preparation and running of routine clinics.

Job responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

Act as a chaperone when required for other clinicians.

Assist the Practice Nurses or GP in performance of clinical procedures and preparation and running of routine clinics.

To understand Emergency Procedures and be familiar with emergency equipment.

Other responsibilities within the organisation:

Supporting the practice staff and responding to requests for advice and assistance from the practice reception, secretarial and nursing staff.

Attend MDT, clinical and practice meetings.

Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety, annual QOF Assessment of the Practice.

Working under the direction of the clinical team, recording any changes in the patients condition or treatment and reporting such changes to the clinical team.

To assist in call and re-call of patients for chronic disease management and screening, including using the computer system and patient records.

Maintaining stock control of clinical supplies.

Re-stocking of clinical areas with clinical supplies and appropriate literature and forms.

Supporting the delivery of standards and targets, including contacting patients to provide or gain information; inviting them for appointments as appropriate.

Plan, develop and implement health promotion activities in the waiting room.

To have an understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 in order to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
