Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time Health Care Assistant role in a new ophthalmology service - Occulus Medical.

Oculus Medical is a division within Saltaire and Windhill Medical Partnership delivering a range of community based ophthalmology services in partnership with the BTHFT Ophthalmology Department.

The successful applicant will support the practice team in the delivery of these services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within specific practice guidelines and protocols. The Health Care Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

We envisage the role will be for two sessions initially with an expansion to grow with service delivery.

Main duties of the job

Establishing and recording ocular history

Establishing and recording visual acuity

Instillation of eye drops

Undertaking ocular tests including, but not limited to OCT, Visual Fields, Optos, Intraocular pressures

Use of BTHFT computer platforms Cerner and Medisight

Clinical administration as necessary

Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care episodes.

Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being

Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will support the practice team in the delivery of these services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within specific practice guidelines and protocols. Main Responsibilities: Training will be provided where needed.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Stay up to date through attendance at any courses and/or webinars necessary to ensure that professional development requirements are met, demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.
  • Subject to a performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.

GOVERNANCE

  • Support and participate in shared learning across the practice and wider organisation
  • Manage, review and identify learning from complaints, incidents and near-miss events relating to the practice, team and self.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and guidelines for self and others, by acting or alerting management team if the practice appears to contravene policy, or if there are concerns over any aspect of patient care.

CONFIDENTIALITY

  • Maintain confidentiality of information, acting within the terms of the Data Protection Act and Caldicott guidance on patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintain an awareness of the Freedom of Information Act.
  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data

HEALTH & SAFETY

  • Comply with Practice health and safety policies by following agreed safe working procedures
  • Actively reporting of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
  • Keeping work and general areas clean and tidy, and using appropriate infection control procedures to keep work areas hygienic and safe from contamination.
  • Correct personal use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensuring correct use of PPE by others, advising on appropriate circumstances for use by clinicians, staff and patients.
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills

SAFEGUARDING

The post-holder is expected to be aware of adult and child safeguarding responsibilities in the context of the post and to undertake necessary training, both at induction and on an ongoing refresher basis as appropriate. They will be familiar with Practice safeguarding policies for children, adults, domestic abuse and Prevent and be confident in raising any concerns through the appropriate channels.
