We have a great opportunity for a new Practice Nurse at St Wulfstan Surgery.

This is a great opportunity for a Practice Nurse to work in a friendly, respectful, compassionate practice that gives staff the opportunity to deliver incredible levels of patient care. The successful post-holder will report to the Senior Practice Nurse and work up to 8 weekly sessions.

Main duties of the job

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team.

Job Title: Practice Nurse

Reports to: Senior Practice Nurse (Clinically)

Practice Manager (Administratively)

Hours: 4-8 sessions per week

Salary: Dependent on experience

Job Summary

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team.

Job Responsibilities

Following agreed clinical protocols perform duties including:-

  • Asthma reviews
  • COPD reviews
  • Diabetes reviews
  • Multi-morbidity reviews
  • Coil check, removal, insertion and replacement
  • Ring pessary insertion
  • Cervical cytology
  • Wound care including dressings and removal of sutures, staples and clips
  • Contraception (pill and injection)
  • Menopause and HRT monitoring
  • Swabs
  • Routine and childhood immunisations
  • Travel advice and vaccination
  • Urinalysis
  • INR monitoring
  • Injections including B12, Zoladex, Prostat and Depo
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery
  • Blood Pressure Measurement

Other tasks include

  • Ordering stock from clinical suppliers and path lab supplies
  • Attend and participate in team and practice meetings
  • Maintaining clinical room, stocking and rotating items as required
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being examined by another clinician.
  • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
  • Participation in administrative systems in the Practice
  • At all times there will be a requirement to maintain accurate records
  • A duty to advise senior practice nurse of potential problems or errors within a range of assigned tasks
  • On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits is this still relevant?
  • Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post

Health & Safety:

The post-holder will ensure compliance with rules relating to their own and others health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice Health & Safety Policy and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Using personal security systems such as Little Green Button within the workplace according to Practice guidelines
  • Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory/contractual/professional requirements, and good practice guidelines
  • Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage, and transport arrangements
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
  • Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control, ensuring that provision of hand cleansing facilities, wipes etc are sufficient to ensure a good clinical working environment. Lack of facilities and Initiation of remedial/corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management
  • Safe management of sharps procedures including training, use, storage, and disposal
  • Actively identifying and reporting of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
  • Keeping own work areas and general/patient areas generally clean, and sterile, identifying issues and hazards/risks in relation to other work areas within the business, and assuming responsibility for the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness across the business in consultation (where appropriate) with Senior Practice Nurse
  • Routine management of own areas and maintenance of workspace standards
  • Waste management including collection, handling, segregation, container management, storage, and collection
