Job summary

As a Physician Associate you will be acting within your professional boundaries, providing care for patients from initial history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of their care under the supervision of a GP. You will demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making and expert care for patients, in consultation with the relevant GP.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

Conduct patient consultations under appropriate clinical supervision

Perform comprehensive clinical assessments and examinations

Order and interpret diagnostic tests as clinically indicated

Develop and implement treatment plans under GP supervision

Provide minor procedures and treatments within scope of practice

Deliver specialized services including microsuctioning for earwax removal

Support chronic disease management and preventive care programs

Participate in urgent care provision when clinically appropriate

Administrative and Clinical Support

Comprehensive note summarization and accurate coding of patient records

Data quality management including coding review to support prevalence reporting and target-based work

Maintain high standards of clinical documentation and record keeping

Support practice quality improvement initiatives and clinical audit

Contribute to development of practice protocols and clinical guidelines

Assist with practice workflow optimization and efficiency measures

Clinical Coverage and Support

Provide clinical support during periods of varying staffing levels

Handle routine clinical queries and patient assessments

Manage appropriate urgent appointments and telephone consultations

Ensure continuity of care and maintain service standards

Work collaboratively with nursing staff and healthcare assistants

Job responsibilities

  • Provide first point of contact for patients presenting with undifferentiated, undiagnosed problems, utilising history taking, physical examination, problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills to establish a working diagnosis and management plan working in partnership with patients.
  • Undertake consultations (in person and telephone) for emergency or routine problems including management of long-term conditions.
  • Instigate necessary invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tests or investigations and interpret findings/reports within your scope of competence. Discuss the result and implications of laboratory investigations with patients.
  • Utilise local and national clinical guidelines and promote evidence-based practice.
  • Offer a holistic service to patients and their families, developing where appropriate an on-going plan of care/support with an emphasis on prevention and self-care.
  • Refer patients directly to other services or agencies using appropriate referral pathways.
  • Ensure safe handover of care within and outside the Practice as appropriate.
  • Work directly with members of the MDT and support integrated patient-centred care through appropriate working with the wider primary care and social care networks.
  • Identify community health needs and participate in the development of patient and family-centred strategies to address them.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Postgraduate Diploma or Master's degree in Physician Associate Studies from an approved program
  • Current registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) as a Physician Associate
  • Successful completion of the Physician Associate National Exam (PANE)
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and lifelong learning
  • Strong clinical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare professionals
  • Proficiency in clinical documentation and medical coding systems
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a busy general practice environment
  • Understanding of NHS structure and primary care operations
  • Commitment to patient safety and quality improvement

Desirable

  • Experience or placement training in general practice or primary care settings
  • Familiarity with EMIS clinical systems or similar electronic health records
  • Training in minor procedures including microsuctioning and basic wound care

  • Additional language skills relevant to diverse patient populations
