Job responsibilities
Main Activities, Duties and Responsibilities:
The post-holder will act as an
HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist providing scientific services to patients
and liaising with the MDT within Windmill Surgery.
The post holder will work within Windmill
Surgery and process the results of tests returned from UHCW and other
processing facilities using defined protocols.
The post-holder will work with the
MDT and UHCW to develop protocols for dealing with the complete range of received
test results.
The post holder will be competent
to work unsupervised and sometimes work from home.
Clinical Governance:
Assist with the preparation of Standard
Operational Procedures
Participate in audit processes research
projects, as required.
Be responsible for point-of-care systems
throughout the group, ensuring adherence to quality control and training
policies.
Be responsible for dealing with analytical
issues relating to POCT according to practice policies.
Be responsible for dealing with EQA / IQC issues
relating to point of care according to practice policies.
Management:
To assist in developing protocols and suggest
improvements to policies and procedures.
Ensure that personal work activity is managed to
use time effectively.
Liaising with other healthcare professionals
regarding complex tests and investigations.
Develop common systems and approaches across Windmill
Surgery.
Education and Development:
Undertake ongoing training and development and
update the Professional Development Plan, as the Lead GP requires.
Clinical:
Result receipt and handling, following agreed
protocols.
Clerical duties, including use of computers,
data entry and telephone enquiries.
Identify where results are received and require
urgent action, taking appropriate steps to ensure that these are highlighted to
the relevant clinician, or, depending on protocols, that the patient is advised
of the need for follow-up.
Logging and coding of results into EMIS
Analysis of results, including more complex/specialist
investigations requiring a high level of skill
Exercise judgment and interpretation to validate
results and generate appropriate tasks in accordance with policies and
procedures.
To carry out other duties deemed appropriate by
senior staff.
Managing laboratory results and either:
o
Filing in the EMIS clinical record according to
protocols and medical guidance
o
Acting on abnormal results, along clearly
defined protocols e.g., new finding of anaemia etc. and progressing next
steps before clinician review.
o
Liaising with clinicians where results do not
fit into the above criteria to agree on next steps.
Identify and recall patients with long-term
conditions for annual reviews.
Communications and relationships:
Liaising with UHCW including chemistry,
immunology, haematology and microbiology to agree shared processes and
protocols.
Contacting patients, in line with agreed
protocols to advise where further testing is required and to discuss results
where appropriate.
Use EMIS to retrieve results in response to
enquiries.
Patients with communication difficulties and
barriers to understanding (e.g. stroke patients or when English is not the
first language) must be dealt with sensitively.
Measures and performance indicators:
Increased patient satisfaction Improving
efficiency of cascading investigations where appropriate to speed diagnosis and
management
- Reduce number of results that clinicians have to
personally review
- Reduction
in the need for a clinician appointment after a first result where the protocol
dictates that further tests are needed.
Research and Audit- Conducting audits. An example might be to review rheumatology
patients moving to bi-monthly testing from monthly testing where stable
