Job summary

The Foundation Trainee Pharmacist role is a one-year split placement between Lancaster Medical Practice and Rosebank Pharmacy. This will take place throughout the year, with 2 days per week at the Medical Practice and 2.5 days a the Pharmacy, and 0.5 days study. The placement is for 12 months and would normally commence from either July, August or September. Study days will be supported through an external company to support the GPhC exam, including calculations and clinical days in relation to different clinical systems. A designated supervisor will be allocated at both locations.

Main duties of the job

Lancaster Medical Practice

To work within the Medicine Management Team, including Administrators, Support Worker, Technicians and Pharmacists, understanding the job roles of each.

Review the process of how prescriptions are processed, including different types of prescriptions.

To be able to confidently process Docman letters, discharges and third party requests.

To be able to support the pharmacists with care home reviews and understand the prescription process for ordering medication for residents.

Understand the GP contract and the safety audits needed to be carried out at regular intervals to ensure patient safety.

Rosebank Pharmacy

To provide healthy living advice to patients, including a healthy living campaign.

To be able to confidently use the pharmacy computer systems including, RxWeb and Clara.

To understand the process of over the counter medications, and any red flags that should be signposted, including where to sign post to.

To understand the journey of the prescription throughout the pharmacy, including dispensing, clinical check, accuracy check, hand out process and the end of the month process.

To be trained as a vaccinator and support in the flu vaccination campaign.

Understand the position of the community pharmacy with the NHS and how funding is allocated, and implementation of services within the pharmacy.

Rosebank Pharmacy is a small, busy and friendly independent community pharmacy. The pharmacy is located within Galgate Health Centre in the small community of Galgate on the outskirts of Lancaster.
