Job summary

  • To support delivery of safe, effective, person-centred care across routine clinics and long-term condition pathways under the supervision of registered clinicians.
  • To contribute to prevention and health promotion initiatives, vaccination/immunisation programmes, and reduction of health inequalities across the practice population.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform observations and basic clinical measurements: BP, pulse, SpO2, temperature, height, weight, BMI, peak flow.
  • Phlebotomy and specimen handling; urine dipstick and point-of-care tests as trained.
  • ECG recording.
  • NHS Health Checks and lifestyle brief interventions (smoking cessation,alcohol screening, weight management, physical activity advice).
  • Wound care support: simple dressings, suture/clip removal, leg ulcer care under protocol.
  • Immunisations support within scope and training.
  • Chaperoning and assisting with procedures.
  • Long-term condition recall support.
  • Health promotion, signposting to other services.

Key responsibilities Clinical (under supervision and within competence)

  • Perform observations and basic clinical measurements: BP, pulse, SpO2, temperature, height, weight, BMI, peak flow.
  • Phlebotomy is an essential and mandatory component of this role, fundamental to the delivery of safe and effective clinical care. The postholder must be competent in accurate blood collection techniques.
  • ECG recording.
  • NHS Health Checks and lifestyle brief interventions (smoking cessation, alcohol screening, weight management, physical activity advice).
  • Wound care support: simple dressings, suture/clip removal, leg ulcer care under protocol.
  • Vaccination support within scope and training.
  • Chaperoning and assisting with procedures.
  • Long-term condition recall support.
  • Health promotion, signposting to other services .

Clinical governance and safety

  • Work to practice SOPs, escalate red flags promptly to a registered clinician.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain stock, equipment calibration, cold chain support, and room readiness.
  • Comply with infection prevention and control, waste disposal, sharps safety.
  • Participate in audits and quality improvement projects.
  • Safeguarding: identify and escalate concerns in line with policy; record accurately.

Administration and teamwork

  • Prepare clinics, manage recalls, send patient communications (SMS/letters), and support data quality/QOF.

  • Support equitable access for vulnerable groups with reasonable adjustments.
