Job summary

  • named supervisors for every clinic with allocated debrief time.

  • Newly qualified PA's see fewer patients and build up numbers as experience and confidence grows.

  • PA's use this to attend the weekly 2.5 hour GP training tutorial.
  • weekly 1 hour clinical meeting with GPs and pharmacists.

  • support to do preceptorship program if needed.
  • caseload is mixture of general clinics plus some chronic disease reviews such as Asthma, Diabetes, Hypertension, Learning difficulties, smear taking (depending on training needs of PA and needs of the practice). PA's have been given training to be able to develop these interests.
  • teaching with medical students if interested and ready.
  • New starter 3m review and annual appraisal.

Main duties of the job

1. SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

  • To deliver a high standard of patient care using advanced autonomous clinical skills with in-depth theoretical knowledge and evidence based practice working under the supervision of a GP;
  • To manage a clinical caseload and deal with presenting patients needs in a primary care setting;

About us

We have 5 GP partners, 5 salaried GPs, 2 Pharmacists, 4 Nurses, 2 HCA, 1PA and 1 Nursing Associate. There is management and admin support. We have medical student teaching and also host many visiting clinicians such as drug counselling, midwives, wellbeing workers. The list size is 14850 patients.

Job responsibilities

2. MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

The post holder will under appropriate supervision:

  • Provide first point of contact for patients presenting with undifferentiated, undiagnosed problems, utilising history taking, physical examination, problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills to establish a working diagnosis and management plan working in partnership with patients;
  • Undertake surgery based consultations for emergency or routine problems as agreed with the GP practice;
  • Undertake telephone consultations / home visits and participate in duty rotas if required and agreed by the GP practice;
  • Become expert in contributing to the management of long term conditions, working as part of the multi-disciplinary team;
  • Instigate necessary invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tests or investigations and interpret findings/reports within the scope of a PAs practice and after discussion and agreement with the supervising GP. Discuss the result and implications of laboratory investigations with patients after discussion and agreement with the patients GP;
  • Utilise clinical guidelines and promote evidence-based practice

  • Refer patients directly to other services or agencies using appropriate referral pathways after discussion and agreement with the supervising GP;

Training and development

Keep up to date on relevant medical research and evidence based medical practice, technology and related issues by attending continuing education courses and professional meetings, reading journals etc.

Ensure continuing education, training and development is undertaken to meet the needs of continuing professional and personal development.

Commit to undertake a minimum of 50 hours of continuing professional development each year and take national re-certification examinations as required.

Administration

  • Fully document all aspects of patient care on the practice computer system and complete all required documentation for legal and administrative purposes in accordance with relevant standards;

Ensure that computer records are of a standard that the GP practice agrees is appropriate and follow the practice agreed guidelines on record keeping;
