Job summary

We would love you to come and join our expanding team of health care professionals.

As a member of our clinical team you will work alongside our GPs and other allied healthcare professionals to provide the very best patient care.

Main duties of the job

We would want you to work within the scope of your professional boundaries, to assess and manage patients. You will provide assessment, treatment and diagnosis to patients via telephone and face-to-face consultations. Consultations will be held in surgery clinics and on home visits.

You will need to demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making and expert care including assessment and diagnostic skills. There will be a need to prioritise and triage the needs of patients making any necessary referrals for investigations as appropriate.

You must be a qualified Physician Associate, with a PG diploma or MSc in Physician Associate Studies from a recognised UK or US programme, and to have passed the UK physician associate national exam.

About us

We are a stable 6 partner practice on the South Coast. We have 12,500 patients who are looked after by a varied and experienced clinical team made up of a wide variety of roles which includes a Pharmacist, Physiotherapist, Paramedic practitioner and Mental Health Practitioner.The clinical team is supported by a dedicated patient services team.

The practice is based in a purpose-built, well equipped medical centre with free parking available on site. We share the premises with Sussex Community Foundation Trust who provide physiotherapy, podiatry, community nurses and health a health visiting service.

There is a great team spirit at Selsey, the teams meet daily for an informal, professional catch-up over coffee.

Selsey is a seaside town with a village feel, approximately 8 miles south of the historic cathedral city of Chichester. It has a strong community spirit with some amazing local charities who we work closely with to support the work of the practice for the benefit of the patients.

The practice has 2 trainers and is a KSS Deanery training practice; we also take Brighton and Sussex Medical School medical students and nursing students.

We use TPP Systmone clinical system.

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Physicians Associate. The job holder will always work within their scope of clinical practice. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

Working as part of the duty team to provide care for presenting patients from initial history-taking and clinical assessment through to diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of care. This may include assessing requests from patients via online consultations.

Undertake reviews for appropriate patients, resulting in the production of health action plans

Assisting with the production of advanced care plans for frail or end of life patients using the RESPECT tool.

Maintain a clean, safe environment, ensuring adherence to standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control.

Make effective use of training to update knowledge and skills, and initiate and manage the training of others across the full range of infection control and patient processes.

Produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultations, consistent with legislation, policies and procedures

Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the Practice.

Maintain an awareness of the developments in the care and treatment of patients in order to be able to carry out duties competently

Ensure education, training and development is undertaken to meet clinical governance guidelines for Continuing Professional and Personal Development.

Keep up to date with relevant medical research, technology and evidence-based medical practice by attending relevant courses and professional meetings, reading journals etc.

Undertake 50 hours of continuing medical education (CPD) every year. A minimum of 25 hours must be in accredited direct learning programmes.

Take and pass the national re-certification exam every 6 years in accordance with the requirements of the PA Managed Voluntary Register and as recommended by the National Examination Sub Committee of the UKUBPAE (UK Universities Board of Physician Associate Education) and subsequently as required by the statutory regulating body when in place.

Assist in clinical instruction and supervision of medical and nursing students as well other learners that may periodically be attached to the practice.

Attend regular multi-disciplinary meetings organised by the Practice.

Attend regular educational meetings organised by the practices in order to update clinical knowledge, policy and guidelines and disseminate other useful information.

Regularly reflect on own practice (and record learning encounters) in order to identify learning needs and encourage self-directed lifelong learning and continued professional development
