Job summary

Working closely under the guidance of the Nurse Manager, youll perform venepuncture for a variety of patients while providing friendly, compassionate care. Main duties of the job

  • Perform venepuncture safely and efficiently in patients homes or care home setting, following all clinical protocols and infection control standards.

  • Ensure accurate labeling, handling, and transport of blood samples.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and provide compassionate care during home visits.

  • Support the nursing team with other relevant clinical duties as required.

  • Document all procedures accurately and promptly in accordance with local policies.

  • Report any adverse events or concerns to the Nurse Manager immediately.

    Crossley Street Surgery is a progressive, four-partner GP practice serving a semi-rural population of around 12,000 patients from modern, purpose-built premises in Wetherby.

    We are a teaching and training practice, hosting GP registrars and FY2 doctors throughout the year.

    Job description

    Job responsibilities

    Working under the direct supervision of the nurse manager and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols and within the scope of their practice, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team.

    This is a domiciliary role.

    The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

    a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample(s)

    b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

    c. Performing venepuncture in patients homes and care home settings

    d. Maintaining accurate patient records

    e. The correct labelling, packaging, and storing of (various) samples.

    f. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

    g. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner.

    h. Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff

    i. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

    j. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead.

    k. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.

    l. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice.

    m. Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota.

    n. Ordering stock and Re-stocking of clinical rooms

    o. Performing routine urine tests in accordance with practice protocol requested by the GPs
