Job summary
Beckenham PCN is seeking to recruit a Pharmacy Technician to
develop and support medicines optimisation work across the 6 GP practices in
the Beckenham Primary Care Network (PCN).
This is an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician to
join a developing Medicines Team within the PCN footprint but also to work in
an integrated way alongside NHS South East London CCG Medicines Management Clinical
Pharmacists and Technicians. The post will be directly employed by Beckenham
PCN, based in Beckenham, but will work across a number of Beckenham PCN Practices
and will be supported by the well-established CCG Medicines Management Team and
our GP practice Clinical Pharmacists who all have a wealth of primary care
experience to support your development.
The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary
team in a patient-facing role. Working alongside other Technician and
Pharmacist resource within our GP practices and CCG, you will support the GP
surgeries within Beckenham to develop the PCN pharmacy service. You will be enrolled on the
18-month national Primary Care Educational Pathway (If applicable).

Main duties of the job
The Pharmacy Technician will need to be committed to improving health and putting patients first. Key qualities will be the ability to build effective relationships with patients, GPs, nurses, community pharmacists, practice(/Hospital) staff, & to work effectively as part of a team.
It is a requirement of the role to be registered with General Pharmaceutical Council. Primary care experience though an advantage, however is not essential. Flexibility, enthusiasm & excellent communication skills are essential.
Applicants will need to be computer literate, confident in independent working, able to prioritise workload & work in a multi-disciplinary environment.

- Liaise with patients, nursing homes, carers, trusts and community pharmacies, responding to medication queries & updating medical records.
The Pharmacy Technician will undergo clinical supervision & mentorship from Clinical Pharmacists.

Beckenham PCN is a Primary Care Network with GP Shareholders
developed to provide services into the community. We are a group of 6 practices
and we aim to work together to sustain real
improvements in both the care of our patients and our working lives. We as a PCN cover a population of
approximately 55,000. The 6 practices in the PCN are: Elm House Surgery, Kelsey
Health Care, Cornerways surgery, Eden Park Surgery, St James’ Surgery and Manor
Road surgery. The purpose of a PCN is to enable GP practices to work together
in a collaborative way to develop and deliver network-based services that
respond to the needs of the local population.
Working together Beckenham PCN practices are hoping to develop a high
quality, multi-disciplinary workforce that focuses on the needs of the
population in our local area.
The successful candidate will join a core Pharmacy Team and
will be supported by a team of Clinical Pharmacists.
Regular development sessions, teaching, training and opportunities to upskill
will be provided.

Assist patients with medication compliance
issues and counsel them about medication e.g. inhalers, eye drops etc.
·
To support the pharmacists with
medicines reconciliation in accordance with protocols and to update patients’
medical records / prescribing accordingly.
·
Support medication reviews and medicines
reconciliation for new care home patients and synchronising medicines for
patient transfers between care settings and linking with local community
pharmacists.
· Provide
specialist expertise, where competent, to address both the public health and
social care needs of patients, including lifestyle advice, service information,
and help in tackling local health inequalities.
· Take a
central role in the clinical aspects of shared care protocols and liaising with
specialist pharmacists for more complex patients.
· Support
the timely monitoring and management of high-risk medicines.
· Support
initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship to reduce inappropriate antibiotic
prescribing.

Assist in answering medicine related
enquiries from GPs, other practice staff and patients in a professional manner
referring to the clinical pharmacist when appropriate.
·
Undertake simple audits of prescribing
in areas as directed, feedback the results and implement changes in conjunction
with the practice team.

Provide advice to GPs, staff and
patients in changes to prescribing in order to support the improvement of
prescribing safety, quality and cost effectiveness.
Technical and Administrative Duties
- Provide training and support on the legal, safe
and secure handling of medicines, including the implementation of the
Electronic Prescription Service (EPS).

Support the implementation of the Repeat
Prescribing Policy to ensure safe repeat prescribing processes and reduce
medication wastage.
·
Support the clinicians and practice
pharmacists with the implementation of a repeat prescribing reauthorisation
process.
·
Promote Electronic Repeat Dispensing
(eRD) and online ordering.
·
Help to plan, develop and support the
introduction of new working processes to optimise the quality of prescribing.
· Support
the PCN/practices to deliver on QIPP agenda, QOF and locally commissioned
enhanced services.
